Cyps beginning to bloom in Kentucky

My Grandmother and I found these on the hill less than five minutes from her house. I saw at least twenty coming up, but this is one of the locally abundant areas, so there's likely many many more further along the hill. More pics after I visit again this weekend. Some are blurry, but I'll do better next time!

That's pretty awesome! I wonder which ones they have in the woods around here.

Wow! Is that kentuckiense or parviflorum? I have been going crazy trying to find a kentuckiense to pollinate! I've got wrapped up in trying to germinate these, as they are a threatened native here. Local populations would be best, but there are only two or three known locations in this county, and those have been in decline. :(( There are reports of lots of hog damage in those areas too.

Feel like going back with a toothpick and tweezers?

OK. I just went kind of crazy from those photos! It looks like it's probably parviflorum / calceolus, not kentuckiense. I'm such a spaz. Well, you are in Kentucky.

These are parviflorum, afaik. PM sent about kentuckiense.

My Grandmother tells me that there are "pink slippers" in another area (acaule, reginae?), so it looks like I'm going hiking this weekend!

Amazing stuff! We don't see many Cyps around Australia.

That reminds me, I've seen seeds for sale......are there any good websites around that I could visit for cultural information on these beauties? Somewhere that can give me tips for growing from seed?

I might give them a try one day.

;-)
