Barbosella australis care
 

Hello everyone. So recently I got this Barbosella australis plant. As far as I understand, they require quite the bit of humidity and they benefit from bright light as they may bloom more prolifically. Anyone growing this can share any other advice or experience? Thanks in advance!

I don't grow that particular Barbosella species, but the ones that I have grow rather shady. I grow them outside so they get cool winter nights and moderately warm summers. I water them daily (but I live in a rather dry climate)

If you have the conditions for mounted plants, they grow well mounted, since they have a creeping habit.

It's just a video I watched on youtube, this guy had two Barbosellas and the one that received more light boooom it was full of blooms and the other one was quite poor, though the size was the same. I grow indoors so I always stay away from mounted enclosures. I have it with coco peat, lava rock for aeration and a little moss on top, same as my Masdevallia whom by the way has loved this setup.

The indoor "higher light" is likely more gentle than my outdoor light... My Barbosellas are in shade, but that's relative. Maybe it's more "bright shade". Hard to compare indoor lighting with what my plants get from Mother Nature.

It's all so relative without proper measures. Then there's these terms, for some people indoors means shade when it can actually be full sun.

Place your hand between the light source and the plant.
Very bright light = your hand casts a shadow with very sharp edges.
Bright light = your hand casts a shadow with blurry edges.
Low light = your hand casts an indistinct shadow.
Very low light = your hand does not cast a shadow.

This is enough most of the time.

Thanks, estacionseca. Unfortunately my schedule is very busy so I can't go and place my hand between the sun and my orchid (hehe, just wanted to make you giggle). Nah in that case it seems my Barbosella is in low light. It has been dropping quite a few more leaves but I've put it with a saucer of water on the bottom, just like I keep my Masdy. Hope this makes a change.
