Bulbophyllum phalaenopsis, in flower ?
Hello All,
I have no experience with flowering the species. I have owned this sample for several years. I received it with only three bulbs and much smaller than it is today. However, it is still a very small plant; the longest leaf is only 23 inches. My question is can anyone tell me if the new growth is the initial sings of flowering? I believe this plant is to small to flower, however, this new growth is not the same as previous vegetative growth, seen in the past. This new growth is coming from the base of the largest leaf, witch is not fully formed. The plant has been pushing this leaf, for the past several months. Any feed back is much appreciated. http://www.postimage.org/aV2p6ahA.jpg http://www.postimage.org/Pq2b7UG0.jpg http://www.postimage.org/Pq2b8v59.jpg Thanks in advance! |
It looks like a new pbulb. Not sure though. At this point I would be optimistic. I could be a spike, or a new growth signaling the start of faster more vigorous growth. I think its a real beaut by the way! Good luck. I see you grow it outdoors, what is your climate like?

I live in central Florida. Not as hot as S. Florida, but plenty hot!

But not dry right?

Rather high humidity all year around. 90% or more.
I had figured it was most likely new growth, rather than a flower. I just do not know what one looks like over the other. Most of the new growth comes from out of the medium bellow the new root growth. This is forming in a different location. Wish full thinking. Will see if it does flower I will post pics hear. |
I hope you are aware that Bulbo phal are real stinkers
And I quote from OrchidWeb.com - "The flowers are very unusual in that they are carrion scented and smell of rotting flesh." :yikes: "Fortunately you have to get fairly close to the flowers to catch the scent." No thanks .. :faint: I like how this site describes the fragrance - Fragrant orchids - Bulbophyllum "phaleonopsis – Week old in the sun dead wildlife - moderate - Rotting Meat " |
I have seen this species, with huge flies [by the dozens] swarming all around, on a hot Florida afternoon. I was at our annul orchid show and was able to detect the smell, way before I reached the display. This is one of my favorite species, for that very trait. I also love the flowers, they are beautiful and and can be very very large.
