I've been struggling with a vanda seedling for over a year...didn't really do anything but survive. Well, the constant rain of the past two days seems to have ended the battle :(
It was a V. Rasri Gold x V. Kultana Green Gold.
This morning I found one of the leaves had fallen off and when I moved it the rest of the leaves also fell. There was a white powdery substance down in the crown and the base was black and mushy..
Is that was crown rot looks like?
So, that's the 2nd 'chid I've killed in as many months, but at least they were little guys who never really had anything going for them ;)
Down to 84 now...with 4 coming this week

I think that's what crown rot is like. My Phals got it - moldy and black and white and hollow down inside the stem....

I lost my Rasri Gold this year , it was large , bloomed a lot , got rot and that was the end of it . :( Gin

Awww sorry to hear Sue, guess our a'la natural tropics was a bit over abundance for the little guy. I am watching my neighbors vanda on my comin's and goin's and our weather is much like yours, hers is a leanin', and noticed tonight she brought it back indoors. :hmm wonder in chid heaven if our plants are having the same conversation on the ROT Board ... aw man that's just wrong!

Most likely it is crown rot that ultimately got your vanda, but that white powdery substance could also be scale. Vandas are pretty resistant to most pests but with a plant that has been struggling for over a year, you need to consider all possible causes. It takes time, especially on a large collection, but it's well worth it to water plants individually and while you're at it to closely examine every plant for signs of pests.

I know this wasn't scale. This plant just seemed to be a "lemon" from the start. I kept a very close eye on this one, in particular so I know it wasn't a pest problem. We had 2 days of exceptionally hard rain and it seems that it was just too much for the little guy. There was the white "dust" with a black mushy area where the leaves "met" the plant. All I had to do was touch a leaf and it fell. Oh well...I have 2 vandas and an Ascosenda that I have promised myself I will get to thrive before I buy another Vanda...there are plenty of others to choose from ;)
