Lazy Barkeria scandens
 

Hello everyone,
I have a tiny Barkeria scandens that I got 2 years ago as a small keiki. Until now, it was losing leaves in late autumn, then growing again in April or May. But this year it's delaying, now about a month or so. I water it everyday in the evening, soaking for 5 minutes. How can I wake it up? I disguised as a prince and kissed it, but also didn't work.

Unfortunately, you can’t wake up orchids! They do it on their own. Have conditions changed since previous years?

Yes, but for better, I moved to a much sunnier apartment... Most of my plants are very happy with the change... The plant is in brilliant shade, in a warm corner of the place.

it might just be adjusting...keep doing what you are doing and itll catch up

For what it is worth, my Bark. scandens is also just sitting there. (I just looked at it.) There are some new roots, but no sign of new growth yet. So, just be patient - they do eventually produce growth, then spikes. Last year, mine bloomed in the last week of September. I think that the exact time of growing and blooming will vary depending on conditions (I am growing mine outside, you are growing yours in a window, probably warmer) but its normal time is early fall so there is plenty of time for the "action".

Thank you! if I know other B. scandens are also dormant right now then I mine is normal. I started to get nervous because a friend showed off his photos of a beautiful B. spectabilis blooming right now.

I am living in this flat for a year and a half now and its conditions have affected the phenology of several plants. Hybrid phals are blooming in spring (in the old flat they did it in winter), and growth of several other plants starts up to one month earlier.

My Barkerias look dead much of the year... In fact, I have learned the hard way to be very cautious cutting old spikes - much that looks dead isn't - discovered after cutting into what turns out to be green. So I don't cut last year's spike until after new growth is well established, and even then only take the dry, thin top because the part that starts to get wider is still alive and contributing to the plant.

They started to grow later than normal, but here they are!
I "framed" them so they do not dry so fast.
