Package Opinion, Please
 

With shipping costs seeming to be on a constant rise, I'm looking for a way to reduce my costs to preclude price increases.

Specifically, I am considering switch K-Lite packaging from screw-top jars to flexible, resealable "stand up pouches".

Other vendors are currently using them, they are resealable and only contain about 15% of the plastic as a jar and lid.

I have some samples coming so I can make up my own mind, but does anyone have any first-hand experience with fertilizer in them?

Not a fan. I used to keep this bags of bat guano and they fall over, rats and other things can chew in, they dont close as reliably or as obviously (ie can’t tell it’s sealed)

I could EASILY dump that into the old jar and I like to save plastic

Maybe sell both. The jar for $2 more. Call it the starter and the bags the refill

Right at the moment, I can't even get jars, thanks to COVID-related supply chain issues. Maybe in early June. I do have a supply on hand, but my hand may be forced somewhere down the road.

I'm weird - I'd be happy recieving it in a thin, cheap plastic bag and putting it into my own jar. But then I buy fertilizer in 50# plastic bags at an ag supply store.

I'm fine with the bag system, as I always have jars I could use for actual storage. Frankly, the top on the recent jar of K-Lite that I bought doesn't screw on all that easily anyway.

I'd say bags is the route to go. It's got to be "greener" than the plastic jars. Plus folks shouldn't care as much about the package...it's the product that sells. Those that don't like bags will dump it into something else. That's what I do with a LOT of stuff.

The less packaging and transportation cost the better when I am buying something like fertilizer.

Thank you for the feedback, everyone. I think they could work, and might be easier to ship, if not cheaper.

I got some samples that said they were designed to hold 32 ounces, but it must be 32 ounces of nuts or something, as they are huge.

There are equivalent pouches with spouts, for liquids, but filling them might be far more difficult than a bottle.

You could attach paper labels to empty plastic bags, fill them with product and seal with a twist tie.

I was thinking same, except using a sealer.
