Beautiful novelty NOID Phal at grocery store!

Wowza! I don’t know what stunned me more, the sunset colors or the complex and mesmerizing speckling. Looks similar to Phal Sogo Lawrence (obviously will never know true ID). I can’t believe the variety of Phals becoming so common even at grocery stores! Somehow it just hopped immediately into my cart :-P

What a fantastic find!! I would have snatched it up as well, it really is beautiful Noid or not. :)
Once in a while I see something different from the run of the mill orchids supermarket orchids, but nothing like yours. As to ID, sometimes you can get lucky. If your plant came with a label with the name of the commercial nursery it came from, sometimes they have their product catalogue on their website. And sometimes that catalogue lists actual names instead of codes. Most times it's a trade name, but sometimes the trade name can be linked to a specific RHS named hybrid. |
Wow thank you for the tips camille1585! The tag was super vague so I’ll have to really do some digging (I’m thinking to ask the grocery store who supplies their orchids lol).

OH MY GOD!!! This is luck! Happy for you!
Sogo Lawrence is on my wishlist since forever! |
That is a stunner
Would have lept into my cart as well. I love NoIDs for mounts and on trees in the neighborhood but this one would be kept in house for sure |
According to OrchidRoots, Phal Sogo Lawrence is made of 37.5% amboinensis, roughly 26% amabilis and 18.75% venosa.
That should make for an.. interesting scent. How does your specimen smell? |
gorgeous!
I would have most definitely snatched this one up too! It is very exotic looking. The colors are stunning too.

I actually purchased another one (did I say I love this orchid?) so now I can compare both their fragrances. It’s also a backup plant haha. I really like the cross and that ancestry is very interesting. Who knew we’d be able to find novelty phals at the grocery store lol! For anyone in the US, I also saw them at Lowe’s. Fun fact: the plastic nursery pot is marked with the Sogo Orchid label. |

Scent verdict: to my nose, the flowers smell like Necco wafer candy 😆 There’s a floral scent plus that Phal venosa barbecue scent, it is very interesting. It’s not super strong but this is in the winter where I live so humidity is low. Might be stronger if it’s blooming in the summer.

Not sure what Necco candies are, but I sure wouldn't buy a BBQ flavoured sweet!
