This is the first bloom of the season. It opened this morning and I don't think it's done opening really. It was in a tough orientation and the flower was being kept closed by surrounding leaves. My daughters say its purple to blue red violet.
For me its a yummy blue.

There are about 5 more spikes on the way though

quite interesting how the colours can be changed that much but it was only once I started taking pictures of my orchids myself that I realized cameras can never really display how different they can look under different lighting or different times of the day too. The 3d effect is lost in pictures too, I know I can imagne what it would look like based on the picture but it's never the same which I thought waas interesting as with most things I can picture quite well what they would look like based on a picture like cars or animals but orchids are something my imagination just cannot replicate.

Photographing certain colors (coerulea lavender, and many of the reds especially) to capture what your eyes see can make you crazy. Add the differences in what you see based on light can make you crazier. And just to confound that some more, camera/phone sensors have A/I to "correct" colors... they tend to be optimized for (Caucasian) skin tones... and background can influence them. Take a look at Southern California Orchid Species Society Dendrobium victoria-reginae , .

I try to get my pix as close as possible (mess with camera white balance, and lighting) then fall back on photo editing software (Photoshop, or the excellent, free (for personal use) Irfanview ) to adjust to get closer to what I see. Texture (velvety, crystalline, glossy, etc) is another challenge. Sometimes you just have to be there...

The bloom looks to be a much darker purple today than yesterday. Maybe I will try another photo today. Thanks all for looking.
Flower photography is very hard, most parts of the flower are usually out of focus, you are never sure what looks better, should the camera focus on the lip or the sepals.

Photos never do a flower justice which is why we enjoy growing our own...so we can truly enjoy them. :)

Very nice bloom! I am looking forward to seeing pictures of with more blooms, too!
