Coelogyne pronunciation

Sorry, but I had to. It's pronounced "see-LODGE-uh-nee"?? Is that common knowledge? I can't wrap my head around the pronunciation... :blushing:

I had always pronounced it "coil-o-gine," as some sort of hybrid Latin/English pronunciation (with the hard 'c' and the "oe" diphthong pronounced "oi" being the Latin part). Darn it!

Yes, pronounce it like that, see-LODGE-uh-nee.

I'm glad I'm not the only one to have trouble with this!

Ce-lo-gy-ne is like Che-ddar - Lo-nely - Gee-na (but short vowel sund) Ne-ither

People who took Greek and Latin would agree with COIL - oh - gy-nee. But that's not how the orchid world pronounces it.

It doesn't actually matter how you pronounce any botanical name so long as everybody understands what you mean.

... and I'm glad for that!

Whenever I type Coelogyne, I mentally have to think COE-low-gine (like wine, but gine), in order to spell it right. If I think see-LODGE-uh-nee, then I would subconsciously type Ceelogyne or Ceelogine.

In the animal kingdom, hollow-bodied creatures like jellyfish, sea anenomes, are Coelenterates, and in biology class they were always suh-len'-ter-aytes. Same root, I'd have to go with suh-loj'-eh-nee. (the C soft). the "oe" is a dipthong, so I think that would make it more like an "e" or "eh" making a soft C rather than an "o" which would tend to lead to a hard C.

I pronounce it "See-Lodge-In-ee." I used to pronounce it as "Coh-Elle-Oh-Gin" when I was a noob, to the confusion of the growers I was speaking to. The faces I got at shows were...interesting.
