Bulbo Rothschildianum & Corolliferum
 

Hey OB fam,

Received my order from Marlow Orchids today, I picked up a few "proper" bulbos to go along with my phal. I know these things like to ramble and run and are thirsty. Came potted in some little 2" pots that they are already in danger of breaking out of.

Suggested setups? I don't think I can water enough for a mount as I've seen as a recommendation but I also seem to remember DC having a method that seemed pretty simple that allowed for the sprawl that these guys do. I cannot find that particular information at this point so any suggestions welcomed. I'll see about getting pics up tomorrow when there's some nice light.

Shallow basket, mound of foam peanuts in center, sphagnum moss over peanuts, water heavily every day, keep warm to hot and humid.

my ingredients are slightly different but the pie is the same...WET but airy


i used to only use cedar baskets, line them in compressed coir (super cheap at HOME DEPOT, cut to size) and then place the bulbo and shred the sphag on top loosely...let the water bring it down and around the plant.


my new revision is these coated wire baskets from the dollar tree...they are what i have been using for my Onc and i just tried a bulbo and it is quite nice....my only concern is that ANYTHING that costs $1 cannot possibly hold up but i am experimenting with about 4 plants now so i will report back

I keep posting information from Bill Thom's book on Bulbos. He has lots and lots of awards on his plants.

Instead of spending big money on numerous plants to kill with beginner mistakes, spend $60 on a great book with lots of photos.

My way of growing is using those black plastic slotted baskets for hanging and plastic bulb pans. Packing pnuts are placed on the bottom and s/m for the medium. I agree with ES that owning a library of well written books is always what I go to no matter how well I think I'm doing with them. My mounts are few and kept by my sink to water each day. Some are outside,others inside. Water hogs certainly. The outdoor ones have attracted the occasional frog but glad to see them as a barometer of decent weather.

i only mentioned my method as Farley referenced the instruction I had in another thread. Nothing about my culture is applicable to anywhere north of say...New Orleans?

i live in a sauna and i grow outside...basically as long as i don't KILL my plants, they should thrive.

i claim no expertise, only sharing my observations

Agreeing with others, a basket that is watered often would probably be best.

If you are growing indoors and don't have space for a drippy hanging basket like me, a wide bowl that you can drill holes in might make a good pot. Don't fill the pot up all the way and hopefully if a new growth bumps into the sides of the bowl it will turn around :duh:

I've bought some nice bulbos from Bill Thoms and he even threw in a free frostii one time. What a guy!

Got a shower? I've hung bulbos in there as well as vandas. Since I've got the "modern" type with glass doors,those plastic suction type hooks work well for the dripping process.Also my kitchen sink is by a window between 2 cabinets and a curtain tension rod(plastic with rubber ends)does the trick for smaller hanging 'chids.:twocents:

DC that was exactly what I was looking for, I'm thinking in general I can use it as a guide to find a solution for my growing area.

es, thanks for the recommendation! I've read a lot about care online but a solid reference like that is going to be worth it.

DeaC, I'm stealing that idea for the curtain rod. So simple but would work great in my kitchen with the south window!
