Dendrobium chrysotoxum
3 Attachment(s)
Dendrobium chrystoxoum bloom 2020: This is an old Dendrobium chrystoxoum and blooms like this every year. It is one of my first orchids in my collection. It can bloom like this if you follow the winter rest rules for Dendrobiums. This year, it has 98 flower buds. Currently, 87 of them are in bloom. The remaining 11 flower buds are a bit behind and will not bloom for another 1-2 weeks.

wow, what a plant!
what medium do you have it in? I have this plant and it is not thriving....it grows a little but nothing like it should |
DC: just medium bark mix (bark, charcoal, and perlite). I make my own mix, 3 parts bark, 1 part charcoal, and 1 part perlite.
Nothing special |
mine is in a basket with a lot of rock...how i got it years ago...i think it might be too dry and i will adjust. thank you for the insights!

Great job. Mine did not bloom this year.

Bright and beautiful. Just got 1 last week from a grower-3 small canes but 2 larger ones that appear to have buds near apex. My first attempt at a "large" Den. so you will be a guide for me. Is watering done now that buds are seen and obviously active growing? TY for any and all advice from any of you good people!

That's beautiful! That color is so rich... makes me want to take a bite of bloom.

DeaC: So Dend. chrysotoxum shoots out new growths in June. It will finish this year's growth by th end of Nov. I grow all of my orchids outdoor from mid May to sometime in September (I live in Canada). So, when it is grown outdoors, southeast facing porch with a shade clothe, light is from sunrise to 1:30pm-2pm. Water and fertilize regularly.
After it is taken indoor, I grow it on a south east facing windowsill. Winter Rest: I start doing the winter rest for D. chrysotoxum the week between Christmas and New Year. D. chrystoxum will talk to you when to start the winter rest. At this time, the canes should be full and juicy and NOT wrinky. Here is the routine: Week 1: regular watering Week 2: heavy misting Week 3: heavy misting Week 4: heavy misting Week 5: regular watering REPEAT During winter rest, the room is about 20C-25C during the day and it is about 15C in the evening. When you see the flower spike in mid-end of March, once you confirm that it is a flower spike (3cm or so), then resume regular watering. It only blooms on a mature cane, so all the canes that bloomed are canes that are 2+ years old. WaterWitchin: I will cut one flower spike off to make a hot tea. The flower of this Dendrobium species is harvested in Southern China to make teas. ---------- Post added at 01:31 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:29 PM ---------- DeaC: D. chrysotoxum is only active growing after the flowers are finished. It will give you new growth in June. |
