Seed Pod
Hi Everyone
I am new to this so please bear with me. I have successfully hand pollinated my Moth Orchid (phalaenopsis) and it has now been almost 3 months. A seed pod has formed but i was wondering how long would I normally have to wait before I can harvest the seed. Also I was reading up about how they should be sown, a couple of website say have to have a sort of special material which we do not have here so i was thinking about trial planting whereby i will plant some with the parent, some with moss and some in barky material just to see what happens. What do you think? |
The seeds are extremely small from my understanding and so not have any nutrients like a regular seed. Orchids need a fungus that supplies the nutrients to the seed in nature. When seeds are grown by our hands, they need to be sown in a nutrient rich agar. Planting them in mods or bark will not work.

Thanks for that, I don't think we can get Agar here but I will have a look.

I'm sure it can be ordered online

I will have a look and see what i can find.
Thank you for this |
It's not just agar that you need. The agar must contain a variety of nutrients and must be prepared and maintained sterile through the sowing, germination and growth stages.
