Repotting Nobile-Type Dendrobium
 

I have a Nobile type Den. NoID that is quite frankly not doing to great (although this has caused it to make TONS of keikis, which is kinda nice). It is potted in that weird soil-like media that some wholesale vendors use and I think that is probably part of the problem. Long story short, I need to repot it, I currently only have Sphagnum moss and medium bark (pieces a little over 1cm), which should I use?

You can use either, depending on your conditions. Bark will require more frequent watering. Mine is in sphagnum, but it's so dry in my apartment (30% humidity) that it dries in a couple of days. The main idea with these guys is put them in a smaller pot that will dry out within a couple of days, otherwise, the delicate roots will rot.

I think I would go with sphagnum moss because it holds more water, similar to the peat mix that your plant is currently in. I once moved a Den. kingianum keiki (with multiple pseudobulbs) from pure sphagnum, where it was thriving alongside the mother plant, into its own pot with bark. It died within 2 weeks. Obviously cultural issues likely also had a role, but I would say play on the safe side and use a medium that is similar to the previous one. That being said, nobile-types are tough. And you have lots of backups. :)

Sphagnum is what I was thinking as well, I will go with that. My humidity is VERY low (usually around 20% tops).

I have most of mine in bark, but they’ve done fine in sphagnum for me too. Any that I’ve left in the peat mix I bought them in for any length of time had near total root death. Personally, I don’t like the look of tons of keikis so I’ll pull all of the large ones off a day before I repot to give the wounds time to seal and then pot them up with the parent plant or pot them individually to give to friends.
