Dendrobium papilio (whole plant)
WOW! Papilio (butterfly in ancient Latin) not or joke! Does it smell?
Yes, it had a light scent as I was photographing it today.
WOW!! that is great!!
The blooms look so ethereal, these large flowers supported by such delicate stems. Do the stems manage to stay up by themselves or do you stake them?
neophyte, I staked the you know what out of that plant! A great orchid grower once told me that you must never let the mechanics of staking distract from the presentation.
Well, well done my friend. Simply exceptional!!!
Yep. And that right there is why this species makes me drool. It’s such an elegant looking orchid. Those beautifully shaped flowers look like they are fluttering mid air and are downright massive which is only enhanced by the sparseness of the rest of the plant.

I loved the photo you posted of one of the blooms, and I love the whole plant photos too! What a graceful plant, it's like japanese Ikebana.
What are the cultural requirements of this Den? I can't seem to find much information. |
Thanks all! I mentioned in my other post how I intended to take it to AOS judging which was canceled due to the coronavirus. It will soon have 14 open flowers!
Camille - I grow it in a small clay pot at the cooler end of the greenhouse. It gets bathed in the mist from my fogger and irrigated frequently with RO water. |
