Micro greens? Hydro or soil
 

I like to grow sunflower greens, mung sprouts and mustard greens

I hate soul because it always brings flies inside and I have been getting mixed results with experimenting with hydro.

Anyone grow greens ?

I grew spouts for a while with a two or three layer plastic sprout kit (this is not the one I have but it hopefully clarifies what I am trying to describe:

I had bought very cheaply in the 1990's. It was nice because you would pour water in one place and it would water the levels underneath evenly. It broke and the one with which I replaced it does not water the sprouts evenly and so I quit growing them. I think about growing them again to make sprout and humus wraps but I would need to find a sprouter.

You can grow sprouts on anything that makes them easy to harvest and won't leach toxic chemicals. Spouts get all their early nutrients from the seed so they do not need soil or fertilizer. People seem to grow them in mason jars but I haven't tried that. Good luck!

I like the look of that product and will do some more research on it.

There are two different periods of the growth cycle that are different, the sprout is, as you said, merely an activated seed that will produce all of it's own needs, generally from soak to about 2-3 days

for making sprouts and germ'ing my seeds for micro greens.

Microgreens are the in between phase from sprout to seedling and before the first pair of primary leaves are grown.

this period is roughly from day 3-10 and there is where the questions is directed..i have been trying using hydroton but i am getting mixed results and i was thinking about using coir matt perhaps or simply some horticultural paper but i was hoping some of the folk on here might have some thoughts

I have done baby greens in nursery trays of sphagnum...

Moss about 1.5" deep, seeds nestled in the top, watered by pouring into the corner of the tray until it's 1/2" deep throughout. It wicks nicely and evaporates quickly.

When you harvested everything, dump it in the compost heap and start again.

super idea...did you add anything to the water for fert?

Sure - whatever I was using on my orchids.
