Polystachya concreta
 

This is a cute little thing that grows everywhere in our southeastern forests. The showy species are the African ones; ours are sort of green/creamy, like this, with small, non-resupinated flowers as is characteristic to the genus. The flowers may be tiny, but large specimen plants (and by this I mean a plant fitting a 3-4" pot) can give hundreds of flowers!

Makes me green with envy!

I am pretty sure this one is actually Polystachya foliosa, which is restricted to Central and South America and the Caribbean. Surprisingly, I don't see any record of it in Africa like Poly. concreta!

Thanks Pat, you may be right. On the other hand, it is a well-known fact that here Polystachya concreta is a plant that grows in the mangrove at the seashores. You will find it exclusively on the branches of a certain mangrove tree (Rhyzophora mangle L.) and only on that tree. The plant in the photo I collected in the mangrove where a new road section was in construction. There, Polystachya concreta was plentiful, really thousands of plants in a relatively small area. So, I didn’t think much to classify it as so.
As to the African records for Polystachya concreta I may have induced to a mistake when I said 'the showy species are the African ones' right after the phrase where I was talking about P. concreta. My fault. I intended to say that the genus has its showiest species in Africa. Sorry.
