Lazy encyclias will not bloom

My encyclias prismatocarpa and encyclias Joseph Roman x cordigera will not bloom. They are both mature plants with several pseudobulbs and they were outside all summer in northern Ohio in indirect light hanging very near my encyclia tampensis. X alata which always blooms in June. They were watered and fertilized twice during the summer and have several new growths and look very healthy. Any suggestions

how long have you had them? I know some of my plants just don't bloom every year while others do or multiple time a year....have you seen them bloom yet?

I have the same problem with two Encyclias. I'm no help but anxious to hear the answer.

That could be a clue. If indirect won't do it, then could try brighter or even direct. But gradual sun hardening is recommended. Not too much change at once.

Thanks everyone ...I am sure more light could help!! Will try next year because all plants are inside now. Cymbidiums are outside but only for a few more days .
I would say plants are at least 5 years old. I will move them to more of a SW window.

Have you tried doing a 10-25F temperature drop during the night to stimulate blooms?

Lazy encyclias

I do better in the summer outside than I can do in the winter in a heated sunroom. That has always been a problem for me ....and the lack of sunshine

Shadowmagic 10-29-2019 06:05 PM

i would have agreed with waterwitchin but i checked the temps in ohio and from may till october they actually seem to be spot on for this variety

Light requirements seem very high so yeah indirect light probly the issue after all

Lazy encyclias

It is true that our temperatures drop at night in Ohio and they were outside most of the summer. When our temps were getting in the low 50 's the plants were brought in. Now they are on shelves near the window where in the dead of winter it will be cooler. I would love to see them bloom!!
Thanks so much for your input
Pam

Most everywhere temperatures drop at night. ;) And I've had a bad cold, so my comment was also way off base. I was attempting to say a 10-15F drop, not 25. Good Grief. And a general overall drop in temp (both day and night) I believe is more accurate. I'm sure someone with more knowledge than I will correct if in error. I don't grow encyclia, but aren't they more of a springtime bloomer? That would give you plenty of time to finish adjusting and tweaking your environment. Also making sure with the shorter days they're still getting enough hours of light each day, especially now indoors.
