Trying to find specific Cymbidium Potting Mixture
I'm trying to find a specific potting mix that used to be commonly available in the SF Bay Area, where I live. Unfortunately I don't remember the name.
It was a Canadian manufacturer. Cymbidium mix. Made with fir bark, peat, sand, and sphagnum. No perlite, clay, or lava rock. I used it for living terrariums. It was fantastic for my orchids, and other tropical plants I used. Additionally, without the perlite, etc. is was much safer for my animals. Anyone know what it might be and where I could get it, or barring that where I can find a similar mix? |
Try repotme.com. You can buy different media and make your own mix, not sure if they have sand. They have cymbidium mix but it does have perlite. they also sell through amazon.Cymbidium Imperial Orchid Mix

Did you try googling? I found sev. names and pic of bags that might ring a bell for you.

While my mix is quite different, I am currently unable to find the main ingredient = chunky peat (we used to get this from Lambert in Canada). That grade comes in nuggets or chunks, ranging in size from 1/4" up to about 1.1/2", and can be used for almost all orchids (I primarily use it for Cymbidiums, but have successfully used it for Paphs, Phals & Oncids in the past).
If anyone knows of a source, I (and several others) would greatly apprediate the contact details. |
I believe this was the orchid mix manufactured by Rod McLellan Nurseries. To the best of my knowledge, they no longer make that mix. It was best for paphs and phrags but a bit heavy for Cymbidiums. However, many hobbyists had success with it if they knew how to adjust the watering.
They also were the manufacturers of Super Soil. I do not know if that is still available. |
You might also contact Wayne at orchidmix.com. He is an orchid grower who probably knows more about the properties of different media components than anyone, and can probably work with you to replicate it.
For years, people had the misinformed opinion that, as competitors, we were "enemies", while we continued to do business together. The yard around his home was a cypripedium haven the last time I visited. |
