Doesn't surprise me to see Google as a radical environmental group. I'm curious as to what it means to turn out the lights for an hour. Security experts advise lighting for safety. Environmentalists turn them out for an hour. Wouldn't we just turn them out permanently if it is worth it?

I'm lost on the meaning of this demonstration? Was there an uptick in robberies and rapes during this blackout? A downtick? Any response at all? Did we prove that crooks are so stupid that they failed to prepare in advance for this opportunity? Were there more campfires putting soot and CO2 in the air ? I just have no idea what this signifies

Thanks for this info. I do see the significants of this display of Awareness. Before people are willing to make any changes there must be Awareness. This is just a way to (try) get the world to conserve energy. I appreciate Mother Earth and enjoy what it has to offer (as often as I can). This may not ever do anything to help, but you will never know if you don't give it a try. They don't want you to turn off your electric, just your lights. I do not live in fear, there for I'm not worried about being robbed during the hour. And I don't think I will be building a fire either. I myself will particapate. Just my :twocents:

Exactly, Dave...if we each do our own little part to help, the outcome has a better chance of being positive. I already do a number of "green" things in my home...I don't have children of my own but I do want the children of the world to have a place to live ;)

I'm not against awareness demonstrations, but I am more like GoodGolly in that what about traffic lights? Street lights? TVs, Movies, bars, etc? What about airport runways? What about Xenon lights on transmission towers? These bad boys suck big time energy. I think I get the idea, but not the value. If we really want to conserve, we can do more globally by seeking other forms of energy for generation of electricity such as wind, solar, waves, etc. that are not fossil fuel dependent and/or consume hydrocarbons that contribute to greenhouse gases (like burning of wood or other "co-gen" opperations). Just looking at one's electric bill, for example and seeing how one can reduce it by 10% per month would do more than all this. Yes, we need to raise awareness, but aren't most folks already aware that they need to cut their consumption somehow or lower their bills? I'll just bet monthly, there are lot's of people who decide to cut back however they can. How about forums to discuss viable and substantial methods to cut back? Changing all the incandescent bulbs to CF bulbs is a start, but consider the fridge. This runs 24/7 and consumes most of the electric energy for a normal family (that doesn't grow orchids under lights - see I brought this back to orchids  ) Much of the cause of global increase in energy use is the global advertizing of global development of globally new electrical-consuming products, whether that be Game Boys, or new Hi-Def TVs. All things we just "must have" or we ain't nobody. Much of this increase is in Asia, where (I suspect) none of the lights will be turned out. I guess if it makes you feel better you helped, then so-be-it. But for me, the lights are on as is the TV.

I've always made it a point to not discuss politics or religion...I'm gonna have to add global warming to my list ;)

I'm stepping out of this one... : Smilie_happy_peac

Ross, I do think your reaching to find fault with the Idea of the demonstration. I understand that there are more effiecent ways to conserve energy. And hopefully most people do. It is only to show your support. Just like when the nation hung out flags after 911 to show their support. I'm not a flag waver but I did after 911. If we could get the nation to be as comitted to energy conservation. And yes It does make me feel better to know I was at least being Apart of something that supports the cause. And If it makes you feel better to do nothing, then so be it. But I still like you:)
