Orchids inside or outside in upstate NY?
I have an assorted collection of orchids. I'm wondering if it's worth taking them out to my deck. Previous summers I have had black rot and bugs.
Your thoughts? Thanks Karen |
That is a far more complex question than you seem to realize.
What kinds of orchids? What conditions are they in now? Putting those two together, what might they see outdoors and will that be an improvement? Rot suggests improper watering and/or protection from rain, and bugs will always be a factor in unprotected outdoor areas. |

As for black rot.... where does the black rot begin or occur --- what part(s) of the plant. And the deck -- is it covered over the top (as in protects from rain) ..... is there good air circulation. And you might need to assess your growth media....what sort of media. In my part of the world, and my own choice --- I grow mainly cattleya. I grow them near the side of the deck, where they can actually get full sun for many hours during the day, and it's quite bright usually, and quite good natural breeze. I grow all my cattleya in local scoria. I also water them nearly every day - just the roots and media - without any issues. I don't have a bug issue with the cattleya. I do - very occasionally - but rarely - see scale. But easily dealt with. Usually very little scale grows on my cattleya plants. But have certainly heard of bug issues in other places. Just the growing area and growing conditions will need to be looked at - as the general recommendation. |
