Mini phalenopsis with fuzzy growth on roots
2 Attachment(s)
This is my sister's mini orchid. She's kept it in a partial shade area, watering it with one ice cube per week. I know ice cubes aren't ideal but it really helps keep her from drowning it. Any thoughts on what this is growing on the roots and what to do about it?

It’s mold. My guess is those roots were killed by the ice and the fungus is breaking down the dead tissue. You can either let the fungus run its course or repot and remove any totally dead roots. To prevent further damage, water should be near room temperature.
Maybe melt an ice cube, figure out the equivalent in tablespoons of water, and use a tablespoon to measure water instead. Phals are tropical. Sudden exposure to temperatures below 50 degrees Fahrenheit can lead to tissue damage. |
The picture is not eloquent. As it appears at the first view, it is the deposit of salts from the water used to make ice cubes.
