Okay so my wife's mother got this from her neighbour. Then, knowing I grow orchids gave it to me to figure out what's up with it and divide it, and told me I can keep half lol.
I got it like this, broken canes and everything. It even has some neos thrown in in that mush at the base.( Benefits of living in japan ey?) It has obviously been grown outside.

I know there's not much to go on but does anyone know what this is? Should I just treat it as a nobile until it gets into better shape and gives me some more clues? A repotting is definitely needed, should I use bark or just do it in a basket like it has been growing so far?

As you mentioned, it's hard to ID without photos of the flowers. Even then, ID will mostly be a guess, since the plant is unlabeled. Also, I'm not a Dendrobium expert, so this is more of a shot in the dark based on context.

I think a reasonable guess would be that this is Dendrobium moniliforme, a closely related species, or a hybrid thereof. This would make sense given your region and given it's grown together with Vanda falcata.

Thank you for your reply! A shot in the dark is better than what I had which was nothing. Your guess does make a lot of sense. I'm still kinda new at this and I own only one other Dendrobium - had no idea there was such a thing as a Japanese one.
I got the sheet from the Bakers' website and I'll see what I can do for this guy.
Thank you again!

YIKES! :blushing: I posted this in the wrong place. Did NOT mean to hijack the existing thread. I will move it to its own thread. Please ignore here.

Ok so... I divided it, cleaned it up, remounted it, and it's doing fine. New growth spotted on all the divisions. One of them decided to make buds and flower. Here are the photos.
Now maybe this will help someone have a better guess at what hybrid this is.

This actually looks to me like the species Den. nobile.
Here is my Den. nobile, for comparison: http://orchidcentral.org/Images/Dend...n%20nobile.jpg

Congratulations on the blooming!
