Please help with ID -- Possibly Dendrobium variety/hybrid
Hi!
I am brand, spanking new at thie forum and am hoping that somone here will be able to help me with an identification question. I was given an orchid plant as a wedding favor from my jewelry teacher's marriage. The plant was shared in joint custody with another jewelry student and lived in our shared studio. The plant has since died, but while it was alive I made a pretty exact copy of the vibrant, red flowers out of silver and enamel. Now, whenever I sell or show the orchid copies, I am asked what the name of the variety is . . . and I have no idea. http://bp0.blogger.com/_nqAKWuqvf58/...edorchidid.jpg http://bp0.blogger.com/_nqAKWuqvf58/...dorchidid2.jpg Can someone please help me ID this flower based on a precise copy? Even if someone can help to steer me in the right direction, any attempts would be appreciated! The pseudobulds were long and slender like those of a dendrobium-- also the leaves were slim spear shapes. The only difference between the copy that I made an the real orchid is that the petals are a few milimeters thinner at their base (for structural reasons, I made subsequent copies a little thicker than the original). I would greatly appreciate any help/suggestions!!! Thank you for reading! |
Hi there :waving
I don't see any photos'. :hmm |
Thank you for bringing that to my attention. How strange! For some reason I can only see the images when I'm logged into the board-- otherwise I see those lovely red "x" squares.
Let me try some smaller images . . . http://bp3.blogger.com/_nqAKWuqvf58/...edorchidid.jpg http://bp0.blogger.com/_nqAKWuqvf58/...dorchidid2.jpg Just in case these images don't behave themselves either, I posted a quick entry with some photos on my blog: Bullfinch & Barbury's Blog Thank you! |
This will help you post photos on the OB :)

BTW - :welcome: If you so wish to, an intro on the Introductions - Break the Ice forum would be great as we'd love to hear more about your jewelry and orchids and greet you to the board :D |
I was thinking the same thing Dorothy... I haven't really seen that colouring before in a Den - apart from the TropiCool ones.... like: Woolf orchidculture
But those really aren't that common in the US.... |
Dorothy: The plant had spear shaped leaves (that I usually associated with dendros), though larger ones where able to fold back over themselves like I have seen phael leaves do. I usually see dendro's leaves looking rather spiky and all sticking up, so this was a little different in that sense.
Shakkai: That photo looks very similar (gorgeous pic!), but the lower sepals didn't quite have the cresent shape that the 'Vivaceous' had. I may be spltting hairs on that, though-- simply because I am not sure if there might be differences from plant to plant of the same variety. I've always had a cattleya phobia-- I was afraid that the amount of natural light that was adequate for my dendros, phaels and oncids would'nt be enough for cattleyas . . . and if this was a sort of mini cattleya, that means that it thrived for about a year and a half to two years on a low amount of light. Should I be amazed? Or maybe just enlightened? :dumb: |
