The Jungle - ExoTerra Large

I decided to take on a slightly larger (much larger!) project and replace my 3ft fish tank in the lounge room. Even though I have loved watching the tank grow and flourish, the amount of time spent on water changes, trimming, rising electricity cost, risks of pipes leaking while away, etc, made it necessary to decommission it.
Enter stage left: The perfect opportunity to set up another ochidarium!!
And to my partners relief, it wasn't going to take up anymore room, a double win!!

I hadn't tried anything this big before so it was a real learning curve. For one, there were only 3-4 ExoTerra Large tanks available in Australia, so sourcing one of those at a reasonable price took quite some time.

I built (with the help of a talented friend) a custom stand for the tank with a really clever hidden door for all the equipment so this build really was from the ground up which made it all the more enjoyable.

Another hurdle was that I wanted to create an all cork background and fill the gaps with Sphagnum As there is only 2-3 places in the whole of Australia that I found had a good stock of cork, a flight interstate was in order to purchase a large supply of pieces i needed (i coincided with a family function so it worked out perfectly)

The Mistking system and a few other bits I had purchased from America and luckily was over there for a holiday a few months ago so I was able to bring it all back with me.

We really face a number of problems with supplies for terrarium building here in Australia but despite the MANY headaches and brick walls, the end result was all the more rewarding.

The project is now nearly completed with just the lighting hood and permanent lighting to be put in place but I thought I would put some photos up of the build as I loved watching this tank come together over the last 3 months.

Please comment with any things you would have done differently, problems you can forsee or if any plants should be moved to a different area, your knowledgeable opinions are always welcome

Then we got into building the cabinet and drilling the glass lid for the misting system.

I was waiting on the final 2 orchid ordered and they arrived on the same day so it was a big night winding plants to timber, pinning others to the cork and laying the Bush moss over the exposed soil. I am really happy with the final result, everything balances really well (well, to me at least) I have planted the orchids in small groups to give the tank a more natural look and hopefully this will show well if they every flower.

True that, how hard are Tuesdays!!
Im based in Sydney and I can tell you the exact amount it has cost me. Ive kept a detailed costing for the build, a little OCD, but well worth it. I did it with my last build and I found it really helpful ( and damn scary!!!) to work out where I could save money and be smarter with my builds, which meant more money able to be spent on plants which is what the whole thing was about.
So far, this baby has cost me......

oh god, this is going to hurt.......

I can't look......

$2,681.98 Aud

... urgh! that stings so bad!

I haven't worked out the percentage cost yet so some of that will carry over into any new tanks but it does add up building these things in Australia!
This is the total cost of the tank finished as ive included the parts that are currently in delivery and Ive already purchased the timber to build the hood.
Luckily I have a wonderful partner that appreciates them and understands that they are a long term investment

I tried to buy the best quality parts I could as this will be a show piece in my home for the next 5-10 years hopefully. Im sure the same could be built for much less.

As to the details of the tank schedule, they are as follows:

lights running from 11am to 11 pm
12 hrs
2 x hoT5 aquarium tubes
1 x 6500k LED light
(both soon to be swapped for 4 x 13w Jungle Dawns)

The 4 fans run 23 hrs a day
3 on the glass and 1 on the plants

The fogger runs for 1 hr from 6pm till 7pm
(for visual fun) and the fans stop for that hr

The mister runs for 20 seconds at 1am and 7pm everyday.

Nothing short of a work of art!

Pattywack 11-20-2018 08:52 PM

This is an amazing build, a labor of love definitely! I hope you will post updates as the plants grow, thrive and flower. Very professional looking.

I too was an aquarium nut for years and actually have a few tanks that would be gorgeous if planted. My tanks were kept in our basement and the work involved was becoming too much. I have a 125gal that would be a great project.

Thank you for posting this, love it!

Pattywack, Thanks for the complement. It is interesting, I am hearing of more and more aquarist who have moved over to keeping terrariums and paludariums. I was always more an aquatic gardener than a fish keeper anyway so it seemed a pretty logical step.
I find them just as rewarding to keep and a lot less work to maintain, the electricity and water savings doesn't hurt either.

Leafmite 11-21-2018 11:36 PM

That is really amazing! I also look forward to seeing this as time passes and the plants get established.

I had a nice planted tank of fish once...now I just have a tank of orchids with a few ferns....

No problem, I found all the equipment from a YouTube channel in which he build this unit. I can’t remember which channel it was but here are the links for the equipment.

DTB 03-10-2019 06:26 PM

Hi all!
Its been awhile since Ive been back here, moving house, work and a few other projects so I thought I would post an update on the tank.
We moved into a new place 2 months ago and I am happy to say the tank looks SO much better in the new house. The Jungle Dawn LEDs which went missing with the courier have FINALLY shown up after 3 1/2 months missing, arrrgghh!! Which has meant I have been able to fit the hood and finish the aesthetics finally. I am really happy with the final product and it adds so much to our loungeroom without dominating it.
Ive added a few more broms and I am about to have my first orchid flower open which I am really excited about, Im pretty sure it is Bulbo pardalotum but the next few days will confirm this.
Ive also dumped the homemade fogger and replaced it with a Zoo Med Repti Fogger which is MUCH better and fills the tank with fog which looks great. I will try and post some more pics and video soon :)

It looks breathtaking. You have a wonderful eye for aesthetics. I probably should not look too close, as my 240g reef tank needs to be replaced soon, and I can already see plenty of orchids in this tank lol.

Do it!!
you wont regret it I promise.
No water changes, test kits, food runs, brine shrimp batches, mystery deaths (ok, there are still a few of those)
All the mistakes happen really slowly as compared to fish keeping so you have time to try a few different things to fix it, once you have it dialled in, you can just let it do its thing!

I miss my fish a bit but love my Jungle just a little bit more

MarinaDC 03-10-2019 11:40 PM

I will just end up with two 240g tanks, lol. My current tank is coming up on 10 years, and it it mostly sps. I do not want to get rid of my piece of the ocean.. the way it is going, my corals will all be on IUCN red list soon :(( some are already, i have been doing it for 20 years

DTB 03-11-2019 12:41 AM

Wow, beautiful!
in that case I recommend getting rid of a few things like couches and dining tables and getting a few more tanks! hahaha!
Seriously though, a piece of the ocean and a piece of dense forest on either side of the room would make for an amazing display.

UPDATE: so the bulbo is not pardalotum but purpuraceum (this is what was on the tag) which I think is supose to be purpurascens.

Wow. Just.....wow.

Outstanding!

Thanks for the kind comments.

Unfortunately i think i have a lighting deficiency as my Macodes Petola is growing very tall and leggy and most of the others are not showing the growrh I would have expected.
A rough calculation says i have about 3840 lumen currently beimg produced and based on a conversion from footcandles (thanks to Andys orchids website) to an EV value (as i only have a photographic light meter) then to a lumen value as i know the lumen value each 13w Jungle Dawn globe produces.
Complicated and confusing, right??

So, to reach a Footcandle level suriable to grow most of my orchids i think ive worked out that i need a lumen power of 6400 so i am short 2560 lumen.

Does 52 watt of LED lighting sound a little low for a 36inch x 24 inch footprint tank with a height of 18inchs??

3 more 13w globes will get me too the 6400 lumen number and hopefully the 1000-3000 footcandle power needed for my beloved orchids but i am making calculation based on Internet research only as this is the first large tank i have built.

Lighting is difficult, period!

Any advice on other peoples light levels, terrariums, outside, hothouses, especially for Bulbos would be so appreciated!

I burn 600w led fixture over that footprint. Cattleyas are ecstatic. They love it. Probably too much for your plants, though.

Wow! Ok, that puts things into perspective a little better. Thanks for the response

WHOA! Wattage is not the only factor to consider.

I don't know the details of either light, but design can play a huge role here: For example, a 300W panel of surface-mounted LED chips are going to give you a much broader spread than will 50 watts coming from a floodlight design, so from the same height, the lower wattage lamp might provide just as much, if not more light.

600w is a lot, but my eyes are well trained to notice any changes in the plants. I have been growing sps corals under leds for years, so I pretty much know how to position the fixture to produce optimum results. I do not even need light meter lol.
Dimension:12.8*7.4*1.9 inch
Core Coverage (at 24" Height): 3ft x 3ft
Max Coverage (at 24" Height): 4ft x 4ft

Whoa!

That setup is so sick and what I wanted to emulate.

Agreed Ray, that is why i was hoping for some other light readimgs from fellow members, Lux, lumen, etc. especially actually reading from within the tanks or from where the actual plants are positioned.
Watts, lumen, etc can be so confusing when looking at manufacturers specs.
For example my jungle dawns reach much further into my tank than my aquarium LED which falls off by 50% in the first 8 inchs!
My problem is i have no baseline of correct light at the plant itself to start with, its all educated (pinch of salt) guess work.

Unless you can borrow-, or want to invest in a light meter, all you're going to be able to do is guess, observe, and adjust.

I'll give you two more pieces to use in the puzzle:

Before moving, I had my plants on shelves that were 48" wide x 20" deep. The phalaenopsis and other, lower-light plants were illuminated by 5 of my custom-made, 13W LED lamps. They were basically Jungle Dawns made with cool white, warm white, and red leds to tweak the spectrum. There were about 18" above the plants.

I asked the manufacturer if he could build the same lamp (wattage and chips) in a vertical, rather than horizontal design, and he sent me one sample. I am using it now to illuminate a round "terrarium" containing two vanda x neo's (in the middle) and a half dozen sarcochilus (at the perimeter) from a distance of 12", illuminating a circle about 14" diameter from that height.

😳😳😳😳 any chance of seeing a picture of that?? It sounds amazing!!!

5 Attachment(s)
For the winter, this is stuck in a utility room that is "First Rays' Stockroom" where I package stuff for shipment.

The lamp has a Fresnel diffuser to mix the light better from the individual chips and an internal cooling fan.

I don't know why that overall photo won't load vertically...

I think a couple of....rare species....poison dart frogs would be very happy in that paradise. Big thing in USA.
