Screwy! ~light bulbs
I just got a 3 screw type socket (old style) pole lamp that I would like to set up near my orchid bench for extra lighting.
Any special recommendations or advice on choosing 3 plant gro light bulbs? |
I had one of those things a long time ago, and I think I just plugged in some 'grow light' spotlight type bulbs from home depot I think.....it really isn't very efficient tho....

Look at the IKEA website. They have some Vaxter? Gro lights that one of the OB members loved. I bought one but haven't tried it yet. That is a great idea, btw!

I go there often. Want me to get them and mail them to you? Actually, I have one here if you want to try it.
But, these e Bay bulbs are cheaper for sure...one of the guys could probably compare them better than me. |
Thanks Carol, there is one available on ebay I might (try 1) have to shoot for that

The IKEA lamps are 10 watts, so unless you can find a way to put most of your plants within 12"-18" of them, they are of little value.
Go to Home Depot and find the largest-wattage LED flood light bulbs they carry. When I sold my greenhouse, I had a lot of plants under 17 watt Cree indoor/outdoor floods at a distance of 24" or more, and several were developing pigmentation from the light level. |
Home Depot and Lowes carry a wider variety of bulbs online, and they will usually ship them to your local store for no additional charge. The highest-intensity ones Ray recommends are more likely to be available only online rather than stocked in the store.

When talking about largest available what wattage are we talking about?

The bulb you display is an incandescent, not an LED. I think Ray means plain old outdoor LED floodlamps. Forget about the "plant grow" part. That doubles the cost.
---------- Post added at 10:51 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:04 AM ---------- Lowes has these. I searched on LED Bulbs then refined the search to 100W and 120W equivalent, Flood shape: https://www.lowes.com/pl/LED-light-b...718,4294564618 Home Depot seems to be drastically reducing what they carry. They show many items as no longer in stock. I searched on LED Lights then Over 90 Watts: Greater than 90 - LED Bulbs - Light Bulbs - The Home Depot |
Actually, I was referring to ordinary outdoor LED floodlights.
While still not perfect, the lumens output is far more important that the watts consumed. That bulb you linked to puts out 700 lumens. THIS Cree lamp puts out 1500 lumens, yet only consumes 23% of the electricity. Back to your lamp holder, you're going to have a very tough time supplying enough light, no matter what bulb you use, from those distances. You might get away with very low-light plants at the 20" distance, but the current limitation of the fixture will prevent you from having a meaningful light source at those other distances. Don't forget the inverse-square rule! |
