It’s in bloom with five spikes this year! Last year I got two spikes, which had been the most. I have had it for five years or so, and it has been growing well in s/h for about the past four. Not the best background...;)

Beautiful. Mine only has two measly spikes.

Mountaineer370 01-04-2018 07:44 AM

What a beautiful display it's putting on for you! I have a soft spot for pink flowers.

SaraJean 01-04-2018 08:31 AM

Gorgeous! This is one of my all time favorites

Better than mine. I have no signs of spiking this year on any of my Clowesias and I am usually seeing something by now:( I changed my fertilizer regime on about half of my catesetums and had terrible results as far as growth and blooms (or lack there of) go

No-Pro-mwa 01-04-2018 11:10 AM

It's gorgeous.

gerneveyn 01-04-2018 11:21 AM

Thank you all for the compliments.

isurus79 01-04-2018 12:55 PM

Awesome! I wish I could smell it!

fishmom 01-04-2018 02:03 PM

It's lovely. I have success with other catasetums, but my only Clowesia, a Northen hybrid, has done nothing for me for years, with tiny bulbs and no spikes. I'm thinking of SH this year in a last effort before pitching it.

Leafmite 01-04-2018 02:08 PM

That is really awesome!

Did you write to Fred Clarke and ask for advice?

I'll take it if you decide to toss it!

These are a new genera for me from last yr. Have 2 of Fred's in 3'' pots from July and have not changed the medium(s/m). The Cl.R.Northen x self has 1 spike and the Cl.R.Northen x Ctsm. kleberianum has 2 spikes. His site info has helped with what I think is a good start. Didn't think I'd have spikes on such young plants. Very excited!

AvantGardner 01-06-2018 09:24 AM

Very nice! Mine is just starting to spike.

fishmom 01-06-2018 01:00 PM

No, ES, i didn't, and I probably should before I give it up. Thanks for the reminder!

MartinaM 01-06-2018 06:29 PM

Beautiful! Makes me wish I had one.

Orchid Whisperer 01-06-2018 11:15 PM

To me, this hybrid always seemed to have a fragrance like citrus with menthol.

Nicely bloomed!

Ben_in_North_FLA 01-07-2018 07:00 AM

What a great little plant, thanks for posting.
I had a great little clowesia, similar to yours. For their size, these little plants put out an awesome display, when grown correctly and it sure looks like you're doing a lot of things right.
I notice you do not have overflow holes in your Semi Hydro container. Do you ever flood pot to flush out salt buildup on media?
My SH quart soup container had a 3 holes about 1 inch up from bottom and allowed overflow to discharge and remove buildup. I used aliflor for media.

The drainage holes are about an inch from the bottom, and in the photo, they are on the back side. I repotted it in the fall and ended up just potting up to a larger container.

Thank you all for the compliments.

I find that Catasetinae do rather well with their feet wet, a lot of light, heat and strong ferts. In your shoes, I would sit the pot in a solution of strong fertiliser (I use 300 ppm N). I leave mine there the whole growing season, and get very good results.

camille1585 01-09-2018 01:47 AM

Beautiful plant, congrats on all the spikes! I've been eying one of these to start out with Catasetinae, and I plan to order it as soon as spring is here!

fishmom 01-09-2018 01:47 AM

Thanks, bil, that's pretty much the way my S/H works., so that is what I will be trying once the plant wakes up this spring.
