fly in december...you must be pulling my chain?
|
We have a neighbor who has a heated koi pond and, because of that, I have sometimes seen mosquitoes fly in the middle of winter and then fall dead in the snow.

There are actually plenty of insects around in the winter, flies and mosquitoes included. Maybe it also depends on the climate and severity of winter weather, but back when I was doing my PhD in entomology a colleague ran a multi-year study on mosquito populations in the summer and winter. It was a citizen science project where people sent in their smashed mosquitoes and answered a questionnaire. (she got thousands of them, every day she had a giant mailbag of samples to process...) My colleague found that the dominant mosquito species is different in the winter, and that there are plenty of them around to bite and annoy people!

Lots of flies survive in my greenhouse.
|
And other creatures. The warmth brings them out.

Yep, I have big blow fly's coming out now. I think I killed 3 yesterday.

If a mouse or some other critter dies in the house, it can cause flies. Just hang up some fly paper.

One insect that I have in my apartment year round, no matter what the conditions, are silverfish/paperfish. They aren't destructive or dangerous, just really annoying. They've taken over the whole apartment, mostly bathroom and kitchen, and like to fall into things (they are good at walking on vertical or upside down surfaces, but are also very good at falling).
I once didn't check the measuring cup before measuring some rice to cook and when I was eating my rice I was horrified to see 3 very dead silverfish staring up at me.:gasp: Now I check every mug, bowl and pan that I take out of the cupboards before using it... |
 This is giving me a good giggle for the morning. Well that's what we call them. there bigger than a regular fly like twice the size. For what ever reason there the ones that appear in the winter when it warms a bit. They will be gone again end of this week as it is going to get cold.

I haven't come across flies as yet, but earlier I had posted about an insect that was eventually identified by someone here. Anyway, it had a mate, (or friend?) but I hadn't been able to find it. I'd put the one I did find outside, and kept an eye out for bug #2. I did eventually find it, and set it free outside as well :)

There is a wonderful souvenir shop at Picacho Peak on Interstate 10 in southern Arizona, 2/3 of the way from Phoenix to Tucson. There is also a Dairy Queen in the same shop. Many Arizonans stop there for a concrete (a type of ice cream dessert.) The shop has a huge range of junk - scorpions in plastic paper weights, fake Kachina dolls, T-shirts, moccasins, pottery, cheap jewelry, fireworks. And coffee mugs. Years ago they had a coffee mug with the words "For my best friends" on the outside. Inside, molded in ceramic on the bottom, was a huge, extremely life-like cockroach. Picacho Peak is also the site of the westernmost battle of the US Civil War, April 15, 1862. A re-enactment is held each year. |
