Spike count rising...
Out of 26 phals, I now have 12 that are spiking. This is only November, and several of these had started to spike mid-October. This seems early for some reason. My largest one that I've named Twin Towers (2 tall spikes) is budding, and will be in full bloom within 2 weeks. Last year it didn't start to spike until the first week in Dec. I don't understand why all these guys are already in spike? Not that I'm complaining really...:blushing:

we have three of ours doing the same thing. we bought them booming this year a few months ago.
|
Mine are too. At this rate they will be over before it is time to put them outside.
|
It's more unusual to have any orchid spike at the exact same time every year. I have a several that, year to year, bloom about the same time but most have a mind of their own and I can only pin it to a season, rather than a month.
|
As soon as those temperatures, drop, they start spiking. Mine started in September and the first blooms are starting to open now.
|
I went through the group today, and I actually have 14 that are now spiking. If I don't lose any to bud blast or any other unforeseen problem, my living room kitchen area is going to be really awesome with all those bloomed!
|
I'm thrilled! The spike count is now up to 18, and the one I thought was only going to send up 1 spike is putting up 2! This is the best year yet!!
|
Congrats on all the spikes! :) I don't think they started early, I usually started seeing spikes on my Phals in early october and nearly all that decide to bloom will have set spikes by the end of the year.
Wish I still had a large Phal collection, I had to trash many of them in the last 2 years due to a mystery Phal disease. |

I have one Phal that gave me a single spike with a few flowers over the last half of summer. Those are all gone now, but lo and behold, it's growing another spike! Another one of my Phals is putting up a spike for the first time in about eighteen months. Sounds like many of us are going to be enjoying flowers over the holidays. :) |
Good for you Mountaineer! And Happy Thanksgiving!

I have a cactus, Trichocereus (now Echinopsis) candicans, that for a number of years flowered exactly on the night of March 31/April 1.

Interesting. Must be kind of neat to know exactly when plant will flower. |
Hi all and Merry Christmas! An update on the number of phals I have spiking. 25 out of 28!! and out of those, 10 so far are double spiked!!Yea!:cheer: And to my continued surprise, the phal rescure that I had brought home from work a while ago is actually spiking too. I had cut off the bloomed spike to help it recover from the neglect (the air roots looked really shot) and here it is in spike again!
