Cattleya gigas (warscewiczii) 'Frau Melanie Beyrodt'

First blooming of this plant for me. As beautiful today as it was in 1904.

Wow a piece of an original wild collected plant? It has a very beautiful lip, and the white sets it off nicely! So.......?

Yes indeed. It has never been mericloned, so plants of it are inevitably divisions of the original.

Divisions appear once or twice a year on fleabay, and if you know who to ask (and have the funds to do so) it can be acquired without too much difficulty.

I didn't realize this! Very cool!

I can see this in Zelda Fitzgerald's hair!

My two warscewiczii seedlings appear to be the tastiest things in my collection to rats. They're still alive, and I'm still trapping rats.

A delicious flower! Great one this warscewiczii!

No-Pro-mwa 08-26-2017 10:36 AM

It's gorgeous.

Rats , really ? ... Or snails or slugs ??

Please note :: slugs love beer ... I put an inch-wide plastic bottle cap filled with beer onto the compost , and slugs go there and get stunned , sort of ...

THIS IS SERIOUS , NO JOKE :waving

Pack rats. I could show you photos of the ones I've trapped.

Just FYI, you are correct, as of the date of your post, re F.M.B. not having been meristemed. However as of now, a clean piece was sent to Beth Lamb in FL and she has meristemed it. Plants are at a point of being available.

The only reason I mention it, is it frustrates me that when looking at an available piece of one of these antique plants on eBay, there is no registry that tells us if it's been meristemed to know if the seller is reliable in their description.

Absolutely stunning. This has long been one of my favorite Cattleya species and I can't wait to see my semi-alba seedlings bloom!

sam1147 05-23-2024 11:37 AM
