Confessions from California

I have forced my SO to watch orchid youtube videos despite protests of "I don't understand what they are talking about".

I sent my mom to a show I couldn't attend with a list where she was accosted by the local society and according to her, "they talked my ear off".

I have violated self imposed no-buy times so often no one believes me anymore.

Children I have regular contact with know what an "epiphyte" is.

I retell orchid facts to friends and family when it is likely they didn't understand me the first time and have likely forgotten.

I have contacted my SO at work to bid on an orchid whose auction is ending soon.

I make people smell my orchids.

Nice to meet you all and tell me your confessions!

Read 5 OP posts and all will be forgiven :bowing

Hi Josi, and welcome to the Orchid Board.

Your post reads almost like a "Dear Prudence" letter, and made me laugh. My own children were raised with my orchids. Everything you're doing is perfectly normal. Spouses, parents, children, and the like must all adapt to our madness to survive.

Hello and welcome!

So far the people have been tolerant/supportive but my dog has gotten jealous and tried to hide my cymbidiums :/

Hello, Josi, and welcome! So far, my only confession is that I seriously regret not getting into orchids a looooong time ago!

People with both dogs and orchids are the finest. My dogs don't get jealous of mine, however. Unfortunately, the mice in my house do - they eat them.

Welcome. We are all addicted too.

Welcome Josi!!
Sounds a lot like my life😁 my hubby would have hung up on me calling him about the 'chids at work though😂
Do you have an instagram? I keep track of mine as well as the other beauties I get to see!!
However, seeing as you are in California I'd probably have far more trouble controlling myself with collecting than I already do 😋

PaphMadMan 03-22-2017 09:33 AM

Welcome! Without further testimony I'd say you are only about a 4 out of 10 on the orchid addiction scale. We'll have you up to 7 in no time.

Dollythehun 03-22-2017 01:33 PM

You know you are addicted:
When your car is in the shop you are having coffee with a dear friend and desperately wanting to get home to repot.

And when that new beauty mark on your neck is bark...

We welcome you and your sense of humor.

:welcomeflowers: This is an awesome forum . This is a safe space :) Feel free to buy too many orchids, and remember....there's always room for one more orchid

Welcome!

My boyfriend patiently tolerates my plants and the invasion that has taken place in the past year. Whenever I have a new bud or spike, I make him come look. I know he doesn't really care, and he knows I know he doesn't care, but he comes and looks anyway because he knows it's important to me.

I'm sure many of us have that patient significant other, friend, parent or child that quietly nods and smiles and even throws in an "oooo, ahhh" for our benefit.

I thought my addiction was in remission. I hadn't purchased any orchids since December. Then, somebody posted about a vendor. I checked out said vendor... and he had an orchid I have been looking for a while and couldn't find anywhere, but he only one! I thought "no way he still has it, his price list is dated 2016." I e-mailed anyway. Not only did he have it, but he put my name on it and is going to hold it a few weeks! I'm super pumped!

In the mean-time... I just ordered a couple of orchids. My justification? It's the second day of spring and going to be below zero tonight and below freezing all tomorrow. I need more green.

On the bright side... we'll be above 40 for the weekend!

This is a great place, by the way. It will further your addiction though. So many people here have beautiful plants and are amazing photographers. I come on sometimes just to look at the amazing photos and variety!

Well said, Salixx.

I saw this and thought it was a great idea! I started it, figure I'll post one a day for a while. What's your Instagram?

Someone should come up with one of those on-line quizzes on orchid addiction scale.

End threadjack!!!

Welcome!

My daugther, who's 21 now, saw me watering and said: "It seems you've got yourself new kids to take care!".

My son, who is 16 doesn't show any interest and makes a point to show it when I tell him "Hey, look at this beauty! Smell it!"

Welcome to the board!

I am fortunate to have a daughter, she's 26 and has taken a big interest in growing succulents within the last year. She has enjoyed my orchids and loves to see the blooms. I live close to Al's Orchids and he sells some succulents as well so my daughter is always ready to visit Al whenever I want to go. His greenhouse is amazing!

A couple weeks ago we went to visit again and my daughter decided she was ready to try an orchid! I was pretty pleased and told her to pick whichever one she wanted, my treat. It took her forever, she finally decided on a nice Oncidium wilsonara eye candy pinkie. That's a mouth full! Anyway the plant is pretty big and had two long spikes full of buds.

I receive daily updates and pictures as this plants flowers open. My daughter is thrilled with the orchid, it's flowers and the sweet fragrance.

She has began to lurk here on the board too, hopefully she will join soon. It's great having her to share my orchid addiction with.
