Cymbs - 15 spikes in 4 plants

I haven't noticed before but to day when I was checking my cymbs I realised there are a lot of spikes growing in four of my cymbs. Count them and, if I haven't missed any, there are 15.

No photos yet but I will update this thread as they start to bloom. One more week and I think I'll have some already.:)

Tindomul 12-01-2016 10:22 AM

Nice, that sounds very exciting. How far along are they?

rbarata 12-01-2016 11:15 AM

Three of them (from two plants) will probably bloom in one to two weeks. One of these two is a plant that was offered a year ago so I don't know how the flowers are. All the other will need maybe a month or two to bloom.

Well keep us updated.

No-Pro-mwa 12-02-2016 02:17 PM

Wow, I can't wait to see them.

rbarata 02-19-2017 12:28 PM

Update... the first spike has bloomed already.
It's a division I got as an offer last Spring and it's the first time it blooms under my care. The division has 5 pbulbs so that's why it's blooming already.
It still has a second spike almost blooming.

Nice one!

Wow just beautiful. I can not wait to see the others when they bloom for you.

rbarata 03-09-2017 01:10 PM

Update...I was watering my cymbs and noticed a scent like roses. I couldn't believe but this yellow cymb is fragrant. It's noticeable when I'm near the plant but smelling on top of the flowers it is intense, like roses.

I never had a fragrant cymb and didn't knew they exist.:)

No-Pro-mwa 03-11-2017 01:42 PM

It's beautiful. I hope I get mine to bloom this year.

rbarata 03-11-2017 03:29 PM

Thank you, No-Pro-mwa.

Some different ones are oppening now so I hope I can post photos tomorrow or monday.

rbarata 03-15-2017 01:42 PM

Lovely, you are doing very well with your Cym's.

rbarata 03-16-2017 03:03 PM

In fact I'm not doing too much with them, except watering. They grow really well without special care.
These are orchids almost everybody here have in their gardens.
So far only three spikes are in bloom, so there are more 12. Can't wait to see them all blooming.:)

gngrhill 03-16-2017 05:46 PM

They are both beautiful. can't wait to see more

rbarata 03-16-2017 06:14 PM

Thank you!:)

rbarata 04-04-2017 02:36 PM

That's, I am soooo jealous! I will show my ignorance: the bloom spikes set in fall and bloom in spring?

rbarata 04-04-2017 06:42 PM

Here they start to show in the peak of the cold (Jan) and bloom now.

estación seca 04-04-2017 07:14 PM

With southeast Asian Cymbidiums, spikes form far down at the pseudobulb bases in late summer, if nights are cooling. They develop slowly, not emerging until late winter. Without the cool late summer nights, flower spikes don't form.

rbarata 04-13-2017 11:46 AM

Not all of them are open yet but...anyway, I like it!;)
But I have something more in my second balcony...when the time comes I'll post it!:)

Just spectacular, rbarata! Great growing!!! I love the meld of the colors, almost like you planned it.

rbarata 04-13-2017 03:09 PM

Thank you. There's still a white with red spots on the lip to bloom. But it would be great to have some blue ones.
Anyone knows blue cymbs? I think I've never seen it...

estación seca 04-13-2017 04:09 PM

Wonderful!

rbarata 04-18-2017 01:41 PM

I've posted this one before...anyway, here's a photo of the flower and the plant with at least 10 spikes (not all opened yet).
This one is smaller with flowers half the size of the others before.
One year ago it was completely infested with a kind of scale called here conchinilla. Now it's completely clean.

This is the last one. After more than 15 years bloomed for the first time 2 years ago and now again with more flowers and spikes.
Not the best light but...

rbarata, you made my afternoon. These are stunning, great growing! Thank you for sharing!

My cymb is in the greenhouse...doing nothing...While the mini in the house has a new shoot...go figure.

rbarata 04-18-2017 05:05 PM

Thank you!:)

I'm not sure how's the climate in north IN but I suspect it's too cold in winter. When temps go over 32 F (and if you're sure it won't drop later) you can put them outside, sheltered from frost. Bright indirect light, maybe a bit of sunshine during the morning, for ex, and it will grow fast.

Now with temps increasing you should see some pointy new growths growing from the base of the pbulbs. Although they can handle periods of drought (ex, one week or a bit more) they like lots of water with warm temps as well as the recommend dose of fertilizer.
