This one just opened up for me over the weekend. Nice big blooms (6") with a pleasant mild fragrance. First time bloomer for me (division). I received it in sheath in Sept but no visible buds.

Lovely!

Are those all hanging from hooks in your ceiling?
Great pics and wonderful plants btw.

Thanks! They're actually hanging from electrical EMT conduit (1/2") that I tried my bending skills at.

I think it turned out decent and it allows me to change the distance between plant and window for different light requirements. Also, different lengths of hangers let me stuff as many orchids as possible in there! I think I've got 16 there now :)

Dollythehun 11-28-2016 09:28 PM

Very creative! I am impressed that you thought outside the box! The blooms are lovely. What window is that? I see no supplemental lighting.

charlesf6 11-28-2016 09:29 PM

I am very impressed !

I've been using this setup for a year now and I'm really liking it. I'm growing cattleyas, dends, paphs, oncs, a zygo, a phal, a bulbo, and a couple jewels in that same window! Most of them are doing well, its all about the placement. Some I'm sure would like it a little warmer and more humid. It's in my office at work so its difficult to keep humidity at or above 50%. Unfortunately, for convenience sake, they all bathe in the same bath, but none are worse for wear and I haven't had any problems. I don't do this for my orchids at home, nor would I recommend the practice.

Thanks everyone for your kind words! Only you guys could appreciate this, sometimes I get the eyebrow raise from 'normal' people

Forgot to mention this is a south facing window, so things move around seasonally to avoid leaf burning. No supplemental lighting. There's a humidifier and small fan at ground level blowing upwards.

Interesting set-up, and that's a gorgeous flower, but it may be mislabeled. Momilani Rainbow 'The Gypsy' is normally cream to yellow, with colored lip and splashed petals. It can be quite variable but this would be unusual.

DeaC 11-29-2016 11:24 AM

Set-up is unique and well done and plants show off their appreciation.

Thank you, yes I've noticed it doesn't seem to show like others with the same name after googling it. I got it from a ST auction earlier this year from John M: W4 A2 CANADIANS: Blc. Definitely the same blooms as pictured in that thread, but different coloring from googled results. Either way, I'm enjoying it!

mjHuntingtonBeach 11-29-2016 04:42 PM

Are you sure the ID on that flower is correct?

Yes, I agree, I think you've got something different on your hands.

FairyInTheFlowers 11-29-2016 07:26 PM

I don't think there's any reason to question the ID. Flowers can change colour drastically based on environmental factors. They can even change colour depending on age, which is especially prominent in the Brassavola and Rhyncholaelia hybrids.

dounoharm 11-29-2016 07:42 PM

beautiful flower! I love that plant! your hanging method is really smart, I like that! good growing!

No-Pro-mwa 12-02-2016 12:53 PM

Gorgeous big blooms.

JFeathersmith 12-02-2016 01:12 PM

WOW!! Those blossoms are amazing!

I'm also admiring your hanging setup; I'm going to file some of that away for potential future use, it looks more space-efficient than trying to set up shelves.

Dandrobium 12-03-2016 09:32 AM

Thanks, yes it works very well for space constrained growing! That south window is less than 3ft wide, and I'm only using 3-4ft vertically of it (except a bulbo high up). You can do a very similar setup with 3 straight bars of conduit spaced apart from window, no bending needed, just make different length hangers. I use a large shoe tray on floor to catch any drips after watering

JFeathersmith 12-03-2016 12:33 PM

Did you make the macrame/net hangers that hold the plant pots, or buy them somewhere? And do you remove the plants completely, or does the whole thing go in the water?

I've been thinking about getting some macrame-type hangers (or making them) for some of my non-orchid plants, but between not having hooks or bars (yet), and concerns about it making watering more difficult, I haven't actually done it.

Dollythehun 12-03-2016 12:55 PM

If you look for synthetic macrame cord, they should dry out quickly and not rot. I used to be quite the macrame enthusiast, until my joints gave out.

Gthumbz89 12-03-2016 07:40 PM

Really gorgeous!!!

How tall is the plant? Also is the growth habit neat compact?

I haven't measured, but it is about 15 or 16" tall, 3 growths. It is relatively contained in a 5" pot with coarse media (medium/large bark, large CHC, LECA, & sponge rock)

Yes, I made the hangers. They're quite easy, just made from string. Its very similar to the tutorial here: Chi Chi Dee Handmade: DIY Macrame Pot Hanger Tutorial
To water, I use a large cup and a cheap plastic pitcher. I catch the runoff with the cup. I let it drain into the cup until it drips slightly, and there's a shoe tray below to catch the remaining drips. Watering in place with this setup is quite easy, but you need something to catch any dripping for 15 minutes or so afterward.
The bulbo (medusae) up top has a small saucer beneath the pot to hold extra water between waterings.
