Cattleya labiata var semi-alba 'Charlie's Angels'

I got this plant from John Marcotte more than a year ago and this is the second time it bloomed. Last year it had one flower but this year it has five flowers on two spikes!

Originally we thought it was a division of 'Marina' but analysis of the flowers indicated otherwise... 'Marina' has a larger blotch on the lip and lavender striations through the inside throat on the yellow part. This one doesn't. As a result, it is not the 'Marina' cultivar. Instead it is yet an unnamed cultivar. John decided to name it after his loyal dog 'Charlie', but I suggested 'Charlie's Angels' as it was more catchy. He has yet to approve the name.

Pristine white sepals and petals, with a bright lavender blotch on the front of lip, makes this a stunning flower of this type. At 13 cm, and still stretching (opened only 3 days), it is a respectable size for a labiata.

Today I brought the plant to our monthly Toronto AOS judging and the judges gave it an HCC/AOS of 76 points! I'm tickled and so is John's dog Charlie, whom the plant was named for.

The judges liked the presentation of the flowers in a row. The flowers reached 14 cm today!

Here are the pictures of it today and the award description...

Those are stunning. Really a wonderful display of blooms. And a great cattleya species too. Congratulations on your award.

Congratulations on the award, which I think is well-earned. Flowers like that make me wish I had a good space for Catts.

Thanks all! It's not easy for a C. labiata to get an award these days since so many have been awarded and the standards are getting higher and higher.

I'm glad that John (whom I got the division from) liked and approved the name 'Charlie's Angels'! Appropriate since the flowers are described as 'crystalline'. John deserves much praise as he kept this plant alive and well for so many many years before I got a division from him.
