BLACK FRIDAY!

So?

jkofferdahl 11-25-2016 12:00 AM

I took advantage of a place which started it a day early and purchased a new digital camera. The one I had was just stolen, but I'm making lemonade by buying an upgrade. Otherwise I'm going to hide in my house on Black Friday!

To those who are braving the great American shopping experience tomorrow, good luck!

Dollythehun 11-25-2016 08:52 AM

Got a new Samsung Note 7 to replace a Dell that died. Otherwise I am staying in!

rbarata 11-25-2016 09:05 AM

Here, in general, they increase the prices by 5% each month. So, by the end of october prices are inflated by 50% relatively to january. During the black friday they discount 40%. Profit: 10%.

FairyInTheFlowers 11-25-2016 09:36 AM

Too broke to care. :_(

Leafmite 11-25-2016 09:44 AM

Andy's and Logees have Black Friday sales. I have no more space for plants so I won't be able to take advantage unless I see something at Logees that would make a nice gift.

Dollythehun 11-25-2016 10:13 AM

Wow! Too bad I am in the same boat you are.

Pattywack 11-25-2016 11:03 AM

Andy's, Seattle orchids and Glass Box Tropicals are having Black Friday sales. I'm not even going to look. Must not look!

Enjoy your holiday everyone!

estación seca 11-25-2016 01:22 PM

Carter & Holmes and Motes Orchids, also.

After Fishmom tempted me sorely, I pulled the cord and pre-ordered some Habenaria radiata tubers from Kusamono Gardens. They also offer a few other Japanese terrestrial species.

stonedragonfarms 11-25-2016 03:30 PM

You're not missing much; the selection at each of these is pretty underwhelming...

I looked at all, even knowing I can't buy right now. In all honesty, I could easily have spent $$ at Andy's.

Charles, did FedEx bring you another orchid?

Beautiful!

Leafmite 11-26-2016 12:45 AM

That looks like a very nice, healthy plant.

charlesf6 11-26-2016 06:44 PM

So glad :D that that's all over with...or is it? :scratchhead:

estación seca 11-26-2016 06:59 PM

It isn't midnight on the West Coast until it's midnight.

Leafmite 11-26-2016 07:05 PM

I did a Black Friday order from Logees. I bought their Lc Mini Purple 'Shimanai' as well as a few other plants. I am pretty excited. :)

I just couldn't stop myself. Today was take your daughter-in-law to Al's Orchids Saturday. She wanted to go on Black Friday but the family had other plans.

She had a great time, bought three orchids. Al had a table of 50% off plants and I found a Neofinetia falcata "Oonami Seikai" I couldn't pass up. It has I believe 8 fans and beautiful roots. It has bloomed so it may be awhile before I see any flowers, I don't mind at all.

Now I really must stop buying.

charlesf6 11-26-2016 10:17 PM

That's great! For the both of you's!

Pattywack 11-26-2016 10:30 PM

It really was great! I always enjoy the short trip to visit Al's and spend time in his greenhouse. This is my first Neofinetia so I'm excited to have it.

charlesf6 11-26-2016 10:51 PM

You're gonna love it!

No-Pro-mwa 11-27-2016 12:26 PM

I stayed home and off the computer. So I got not one thing to show.

I tried to do that, I really did, but the kids were home and ordering like crazy and the temptation got me. :)

gngrhill 11-28-2016 01:04 AM

I just got no more room ! It takes me 3 hours now just to water what I have and I don't have room for any more :(

Tindomul 11-28-2016 02:03 PM

To me, Black Friday means I am a prisoner in my own home. If I want to take the car to go somewhere I can expect a 30-40 minute delay just to leave my BLOCK!!!!!

My wife goes to the two malls around our apartment building and takes advantage, but I hate it all. I think it should be illegal to force minimum wage workers to go to work late Thursday night. Forcing them to work until the next morning. Thanksgiving isn't even a holiday anymore, not when people are working that night. The greed these stores have know no bounds. At least wait until 6AM the next day! How can you go away and reunite with family if you are expected to work that same night. My father was told to go to work or lose his job for Thanksgiving. Doing what, you ask, selling pretzels at the rest stop by his area of I-95. They could not come visit and we could not afford the plane tickets to go to them. I mean, who needs pretzels on thanksgiving??? Can we please just go back to the days when the only people working on these very important holidays were the Police, Fire Dept, etc....Sorry, just blowing off some steam.
Well, I for one, stayed home and slept off my turkey.

estación seca 11-28-2016 02:38 PM

Sorry you couldn't see your family on Thanksgiving. I don't go to stores on holidays. I don't want to make people work on holidays. Of course, when I was a starving student, I LOVED working holidays and I'd take other people's shifts.

It's the customer who makes people work on holidays.

Leafmite 11-28-2016 02:59 PM

We only cyber shop on Black Friday. Computers don't mind working and, in this busy world, time with family is so very precious.

My kids often end up working the holidays as no one else wants to do it.

Tindomul 11-28-2016 03:11 PM

I'm not really against buying on Black Friday, it's just that Black Friday seems to come earlier and earlier every year. This year it started at 7PM on Thursday. Jeese!!!!

Around here, we are seeing a return to closing on Thanksgiving day and opening later or not at all. But, I think most of us agree with you. Greed is what drives the economy.
On a lighter note, Tindo, I saw a Piliated Woodpecker on our large maple snag Thursday morning. What a treat! I thought of you immediately.

Just like Christmas around here. Shops have trees and Santa's pictures since beginning of Nov.
Something tells me one day Christmas will be celebrated in August.

They start putting out the Christmas stuff in US stores in September or October. The Christmas music on telephone hold usually starts the Friday after Thanksgiving. They haven't played the dogs barking Jingle Bells on the radio in some years. That's the only one I really like.

charlesf6 11-28-2016 05:59 PM

Yes where has that song been?
......................Someone let the dogs out!

Umm, you can't thank me for that cause I don't remember how to do that. Can you show me again?:blushing:

Well, that is fantastic. At least one place is going in the right direction.

Also, I wish I could see Pileated WP's enough times to get a photo. On up side I have been treated to a Red Headed Woodpecker in my patch of woods. It's stayed around for about a month now! NYC is not in this bird's range, but since I started birding, they went from unheard of in NYC to a regular but rare occurrence.

charlesf6 11-28-2016 10:53 PM

A few more RHWoodpeckers a little north of you Tindo.
