Schoenorchis fragrans blooms

1 Attachment(s)
My little Schoenorchis fragrans is in bloom and this year it has two spikes! Last years bloom was only one spike and the bloom before I bought this had one spike as well. This is such a little cutie!

Paul 05-14-2016 08:31 AM

Well done! Have never succeeded in blooming this one

Pattywack 05-14-2016 08:48 AM

Thank you Paul. I've had this one since September of 2014, from Andy's. It had a spent spike when I got it and it bloomed for me last year. I was really happy to see two spikes this year.

I grow this in a small vase with rocks and a little water in the bottom. I have a Yankee Candle tiny lid that fits this vase, it helps keep it nice and humid. I leave the lid off during the day and add it at night. I keep it in an east facing window. Has always done well for me.

That's a beautiful display!

Beautiful little blooms! Good job!

No-Pro-mwa 05-14-2016 01:09 PM

It is such a cutie. Nice job with it.

Great job blooming it, and beautiful growing setup!

Pattywack 05-14-2016 02:09 PM

Thank you all, it has a few buds yet to open. A great little plant.

I really must get one of these. Love the flowers and the thicker leaves. Andy's doesn't have them at least not in the online search. I ended up getting a Schoenorchis / scolopendria sp. creeping (China) awhile back. Which is really cool but may be even smaller than your plant. I have had tiny buds for over a month, not sure what will happen with them.

Pattywack 05-14-2016 04:16 PM

Wintergirl you should have one, they really are easy. I'm surprised Andy doesn't have any, maybe soon. They are very slow from when you notice the spike until they bloom. I believe it was February when I saw these spikes and there are several buds left to open.

My plant is 1" tall and wide, it has 12 leaves. You need one.

OMG! I just ordered one!!! Geesh what enabler :)

I have wanted one of these for so long. Next time I want to order and it's not on the website I will call. Andy says they take them off line if they have less than 25. Anyway I better stop looking at everyone's beautiful plants until this order is shipped, I keep adding to it.

Ok, just to help out here is a picture of my Schoenorchis / scolopendria sp. creeping (China) from Andy's I got last fall. I know Pattywack really needs this one to add to her collection. I just hang it with other plants, almost vanda light and no extra enclosure. You can see the difference since I got it. The lighter growth is new, along with the bloom and buds. One is just opening.

That's interesting you're growing it in a near enclosed cylinder... seems like something that needs to dry out and air flow (actually that's what many report), and reportedly needs near full sun... well, guess plants don't read or hear what's said about them LOL

I've killed more of these, as well as scolopendria, than I care to remember... in a growing case/ terrarium, outside, in a glass cylinder partially open... and this is considered "easy"... there's a point where one has to give up... but sure nice to enjoy other's albeit through pictures!

WhiteRabbit 05-14-2016 08:27 PM

Wonderful!

Pattywack 05-14-2016 08:54 PM

Wintergirl, awesome! Andy seems to have most everything, gawd I would love to go to his greenhouses. Can you just imagine?! My Schoenorchis fragrans was one of my first minis, I was terrified of killing it after I got it so I decided to grow it in the little vase and it did so well, I never moved it. Now it's the centerpiece of my east window along with others.

Your Schoenorchis scolopendria is different, I've not seen this one. Hope it's full of blooms soon, very cool. Post pics of your new one when it arrives! We're all enablers here ya know!

U bada, I'm sorry you've not been able to grow this one. I've not had any issues with mine at all, it's always been a slow grower but never a problem. I usually keep the top open except over night and early morning. The humidity is high and the glass gets steamed up. The stick it's mounted on is not touching the water in the vase so I mist the roots every few days. It hangs inside. I don't get the leaves wet, afraid to. The hanger keeps the lid from making a seal so it is not ever air tight. It really has been a pleasant little plant and everyone that sees it just can't get over it.

wintergirl 05-14-2016 09:40 PM

Mine, I just misted rain water on s.moss once a day with occasional light mist to the entire plant. Only fertilized twice since Oct 2015.

No-Pro-mwa 05-15-2016 12:43 PM

Wintergirl that is a cute one also.

My Schoenorchis fragrans arrived yesterday, can't wait to get a bloom on that one. Here is a picture of that one from Andy's. The next picture is a better one of Schoenorchis scolopendria. My smallest bloom and hard to photograph.

Oooh yeah! Glad you got it, the bloom on your other scolopendria looks just like the fragrans. I have a Platystele stenostachya and it is super hard to get a pic of. Congrats on the new one!

How would you describe the smell?

Pattywack 05-23-2016 07:46 AM

These are supposed to smell like grape jelly but I really only notice a sweet, soft maybe slightly grape smell. It is stronger in the mornings when I remove the top of the vase, later in the day/evening there is not much smell.

Leafmite 05-23-2016 09:11 AM

What a great way to grow it! :)

Tindomul 09-10-2016 10:57 PM

Very nice. Thanks for sharing.

Wintergirl, I did it, I got the scolopendria today from Louisiana Orchids Connection. It's a cutie! I hope it does as well as the fragrans.

Pattywack 09-22-2016 06:24 PM

Sideways, always sideways :/

u bada 09-22-2016 09:47 PM

Hey that's pretty amazing specimen... I had one and it was slow growing (once again I killed it) so to have that one that size to bat is really good...

so I've never heard of this vendor! omg they have cool stuff!!! Any loss of money in coming months is because of you!!!

It's a big one, really for a small plant. Yours is very nice.
Yay!!!

Pattywack 09-22-2016 11:19 PM

u bada, thanks it is good size. I've ordered from Louisiana Orchids a few times however this was one of their eBay auctions with a buy it now option. I just stumbled upon it. They have great plants, are always happy to answer any questions, and have more reasonable shipping charges than some vendors.

This one arrived in a 1/2 crushed box, my heart sank but the plant inside was fine. They stuff their boxes with peanuts and I know that saved this one.

Maybe you overwatered yours? I'm going to grow this about the same as the fragrans though not in the tiny vase. As for loss of money, what are you saving it for? I say, try another one or look around on their website for other great orchids! Lol

u bada 09-23-2016 12:36 AM

yep, overwatered you got it... and my tanks didn't get enough light... been experimenting with LED lights over last couple years, and LED lights had never been enough, finally got super bulbs from ray earlier this year and everything is doing well... that said, where to find space... hmmm...

Schoenorchis fragrans is at it again. I noticed this morning there are two spikes poking out on my little fragrans again. This orchid just grows and blooms faithfully every year, happy to see double spikes again. Still in its private vase/apartment. Now the long wait begins for the blooms.

estación seca 03-27-2017 02:10 PM

I'm screaming in my head because I want to touch the leaves and I can't!

ES they are thick and rough. It has gotten red from sun we've had lately and apparently happy about it.

estación seca 03-27-2017 06:11 PM

Now I want to lick it too.

Salixx 03-27-2017 06:12 PM

How exciting and adorable!

My little fragrans is in spike right now but does not look nearly as nice as yours.

Mine was a BIN on ebay... I didn't look close as to where it was coming from. Needless to say, it spent 10+ days in customs and where ever coming from Thailand and lost half it's leaves. I'm actually surprised it's decided to bloom. I hope it looks like yours one day!

*Disclaimer - I don't support ordering from other countries without proper permits (I.e. it's not legal!). It was a mistake, one that I won't make again. Make sure to read eBay listings closely!

Pattywack 03-27-2017 08:45 PM

I was looking back at previous years blooms and it seems this year we are a little behind. Usually it first shows the beginning of a spike in early February and it takes until mid April to open blooms. They last over a month, not all flowers open at once so it's a nice long show.

This plant never gets in a hurry, I love it! I hope you have a nice show of flowers soon.
