Phalaenopsis with 7 petals

I was visiting my mom and she gave me this beautiful orchid.

When I got home I noticed that one of the flowers had two extra petals, smaller than the other.
And its growing two keikis.

Normal flower

And the freak😜
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...e7b8e77285.jpg

The whole plant is small and compact and really cute☺️ Coffee, chatting and this really nice gift from my mom- what more can a person ask for on a friday☺️ I like family, and I like plants.

Hope everbody gets a great weekend😃

*points finger and exclaims* "Mutant!"

Being more sensible now, gorgeous even if a mutation! :) You have a great weekend too!

ccrow 04-08-2016 09:44 AM

Cool!:D
It's got some other stuff going on, too, hasn't it? I wonder if it was meant to be two separate flowers...

Helene 04-08-2016 10:49 AM

Yeah- its a bit deformed- maybe like some sort of siamese twins :p

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...3aa58304c5.jpg

There are others that are not symmetrical aswell, only a couple.http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...f7e5c9fc89.jpg

Lol- okay- its producing many spikes (has five now), two keikis and is growing freaky flowers, is that what we get for messing with nature? I assume when pushing plants to the max maybe makes traits like this come forth.

Its cute either way, but its gonna be interesting to see if it acts more normal next year. Though the multiple spikes is in this plants nature I guess.

No-Pro-mwa 04-08-2016 11:04 AM

Very odd. But it is a really lovely plant in all. Does it smell?

DeaC 04-08-2016 11:20 AM

Being different can be a good thing.I'm excited for you and make sure you keep us and mom informed!

Helene 04-08-2016 11:47 AM

I like different☺️ (but not if its caused by chemicals)

No smell- waxy flowers with a bit of sparkle in it. Really nice.
Mom said it had a name (she asked the lady in the shop) but she doesnt remember it correctly😜 She's gonna ask again, but I assume it might be a "general" name for this small type.

Okay- lol, I like this sooo much, more pictures😜😂
My view when drinking coffee😍

My son- he is six years old- said he liked this flower best, that one was really nice. He liked how the sun made it look so colorful. (Lol, yeah- he is way more interested in plants than my daughter)
http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...acbaddb64d.jpg
I like the weird one, but I agree, its a nice flower.

(He doesnt have orchids yet, but he has almost 50 tomato plants in my dining-room😜😂)

Name is supposed to be Phal. Aristo Orange. Only thing registered is phalaenopsis aristo pink. A search gives picture of random plants- looking kinda lile this, but in different color. Seems to be a name of a random hybrid.

http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...992497b5b5.jpg
This was the closest picture, and this page refers to it as a hybrid made by humans, not nature. Not mentioning any 'real' name of parents, so I assume its gonna be a hybrid. With a pet name Aristo Orange.

Lol, I might try the vendor- I believe its from Netherland, or maybe Germany. Doesnt matter- Aristo Orange is a nice nickname, and I love it. My mom gave it to me with love, she believed I would enjoy it. And I do.

I feel privileged. Might seem like small thing for others, but that is the things that really matters. Being happy, and enjoying life☺️

It's the plants. Orchids. They make me very philosophical. 😜😂 Kinda the reason I love them aswell. Makes the mind quiet down, able to think- mindfulness sort of.

Is this an example of fasciation?

Mandy2705 04-08-2016 02:17 PM

Oh wow I love this Phal, it's got an exotic look to it, very pretty :)

It is a lovely plant and the flowers are beautiful. You are so lucky to have a mom that loves you like that.

I'm not sure, but I dont think so- I would assume it would look more odd then, longer maybe. But does seem like something like that.
I have no idea, to be honest :p

(And yeah- lol, I love my mom when she doesnt buy me flowers aswell. Its the coffee and conversations with family I enjoy☺️
So it was the family part I was happy about, the flower being a nice surprise.)

Believe that term refers to flower stems being wide/flattened. A new one for me!:blushing:

PhoenixNakia 04-09-2016 03:50 AM

What a cutie!! To me the 2 extra petals remind me of ears. :verycool:

Love the color and its's name is sure fitting. :)

This is a picture of my mini that also has the extra petals. I put keiki paste on the spike hoping for a keiki, but it grew another spike instead. I really would like to get a keiki off this one to see if it also has the "special" flower as I really like it.

Helene 04-10-2016 03:18 AM

Wow- yours is even cooler😎 Lol, or- it seems like yours is doing something with the petals, mine is just giving it a try😜😂

Are all the flowers like that?
Hope you get a keiki :) Its a lovely plant, really cool- do you have more pictures? I would love to see more details on the petals, its a bit blurry on this picture.

This is the only other picture I have of it. All the flowers were like that. I'm waiting to see what the new spike procuces. Probably be another month or so before they open. I guess no keiki this time. I'll have to try again next time it blooms.

mexicowpants 04-11-2016 12:21 AM

Looks kind of peloric to me.

That's what I thought too:) It's pretty!

gngrhill 04-11-2016 09:09 AM

I love it

No-Pro-mwa 04-11-2016 10:58 AM

I love it too. I think I have seen it before, I would think if you get a keiki that it would be the same.

I would hope so, but I think my chances of a keiki for this blooming are done. I may have waited too late when I applied the keiki paste, I put it on the two bottom nodes and got another bloom spike on the uppermost and nothing on the lower, So unless there are nodes on the new spike ( and I don't see any now ) my chance on this blooming are done.:(

This flower is termed peloric where all the petals on all the flowers mimic the lip each time it blooms. It is generally termed "stable" because of those traits. The one flower which started this thread is a transient mutation and may or may not occur on future flowers on a future blooming.

Mutations generally occur because of over mericloning of the plants, and often because the tissue is not from the original mother plant, but from another clone.

As a note, I think it is safe to say that all phal. hybrids sold in the market place today are man made. Few if any collected plants reach the mass market. A few collected species are available but with the Cites requirements, we seldom see them anywhere except in the countries where they are collected.

Patrick.Orchidee 04-12-2016 07:41 AM

Nice plant!

gabrielacocinera 04-14-2016 02:04 AM
