Resizing Images...originally posted 6/13/06 by Marty

Here's a cool power toy I found for Windows XP. It will resize your pictures. It's very easy. If you can right click, you can resize pictures!
Download it here

here are the steps to resize
  • Install the file from the link above.
  • Open an Explorer window and select all of the images you want to resize.
  • Right-click on one of them and select "Resize Pictures".
  • Select "Medium" (800x600) or "Large" (1024x768) and then click "OK". The images you selected will now be resized and will be given new file names that include the size you selected (ex. "IMG_0845" will become "IMG_0845 (Medium).JPG").

This utility if free and works great ! You will save yourself a lot of gallery space if prior to uploading the pictures you will resize them first.

There is also a version for Windows Vista. You can find the download link and more information here

Just found this topic.....I'm wondering if this will work with Vista?? I have the home version on my laptop.

Marty 01-17-2008 08:11 PM

That one won't work for vista, but I updated the original post to include a Vista resizer

Thanks for the update, Marty

Towards the bottom of the original post is a link to an online resizer, which I think works on all systems. They also have a special resizer for avatars...one step and it's done!

This program is great! Soooo much easier to post pictures!

maitaman 02-14-2008 08:30 AM

Get the free Irfanview. It resizes with a click as well as a lot of other things. When a pic is too dark or too light you can adjust it easily, add text, and other things.

tbaenziger 02-24-2008 01:04 AM

What a neat tool. And it just so happens I was trying to download an image to the Forum that was too large. Here goes, and thanks a bunch.

maitaman 05-10-2008 08:36 AM

Try Irfanview, a free download tool. It resizes, enhances, and a lot more - plus you can add text. Very easy to use.
I always resize larger pictures to 600 pixels wide at 200 DPI with automatic ratio retention for storage. Be very careful when you try to increase the size of a pic. They pixelate (blur) very easily.

Marty 05-10-2008 08:51 AM

For web usage there is no need to go higher than 72DPI as computer monitors cannot display it. If you attach an image to a post at 1200dpi, it will look the same as 72dpi, other then the massive file size difference.

For print however you can go as high as the printing device will allow.
