Everybody meet Bob, our handsome Zygo! This is his first rebloom, I am so proud. I love this orchid so much I'd hug him if I could! Three more buds to go :)

wintergirl 09-06-2015 09:19 AM

Nice one, great growing!

ThePinkCucumber 09-06-2015 09:20 AM

Thank you so much wintergirl! :)

either that's a super-sized coffee mug, or the plant is small. Which is it ? I am always on the lookout for smaller growing/sized zygos and this one may fit the bill. Nice.

Well, the plant is underpotted - top of mug diameter is 9cm (I'm planning to repot after this bloom). It is definitely a more compact plant - leaves are longer, thinner and pbulbs are much slimmer than let's say our Zygolum Louisendorf.
I think it would take up less space if I was one of those people who tie the new growths so they grow nice and straight. I just prefer it growing its own way I guess :)

Wow! Splashy flower, beautiful.

Myself, I am very skilled at stunting zygos, even outright killing zygos, but not so much at blooming zygos.

silken 09-06-2015 02:19 PM

Gorgeous!

I too seem to be better at killing them. And they get spots all over, despite never getting water on their leaves. Don't know what's the secret, but yours is lovely.

lotis146 09-06-2015 09:57 PM

Great job, that's a beauty! :D

WhiteRabbit 09-06-2015 10:37 PM

Wonderful! :wtg:

ThePinkCucumber 09-07-2015 12:41 AM

Thank you so much everybody! I just am so proud of this little guy and so happy to share!
I really don't know what the secret is, I mean, I kill phals like a pro and here are the Zygos just being happy - I think they just like me :)
Some people say keeping them at lower humidity helps against leaf spots. I spray mine regularly with kelp, and the leaves are literally soaking wet, and still no spots (luckily! I am not complaining :D).
I waited a while for him to rebloom, as he is my first 'proper' orchid and looking back he did go through a lot (horrible light, as I though low light means complete shade and then of course my transition from over-waterer into terrible under-waterer) but the second that first bud opened I remembered why I fell in love with this orchid and orchids in general :)

Such an exotic flower for a "Bob"! I love the irony and the gorgeous plant :D

ula 09-08-2015 02:19 PM

Nice!

My Green Pets 09-08-2015 06:47 PM

Beautiful Zygopetalum!

And about the spots, I do believe they come from too much heat, not water.

Luizacft 09-08-2015 06:58 PM

I love the plant, but the flag written "Bob" is just hillarious! It's kind of saying "Hey, here is my realm! Keep out, intruders!" Loved it, PinkCucumber!

Fernando 09-08-2015 08:57 PM

A real nice one for sure.

ThePinkCucumber 09-09-2015 12:32 AM

CambriaWhat - we do get fairly hot here (over 35C in summer), so maybe it's combination of the two?

Luizacft - haha, you know, it started as a skewer in each pot to test how moist it is inside and later became a name tag as I hate how dirty the regular name tags get, and you have to pull them out and you pull some bark and dirt out with them, eh. Everybody over here has a little war flag :D States his nickname, his real name and sometimes I write how we got to that name on the back of it :)

Thank you so much everybody! Bob was on our orchid society's plant table last night, I was a very proud mommy! :) Oh and yes, I took the flag out for this and my husband victoriously waved it when they picked Bob up :D

desertanimal 09-09-2015 01:43 AM

That last sentence is maybe the cutest thing I've ever heard.

disalover 09-09-2015 07:48 AM

Happy to see it in person last night Irina!

Luizacft 09-09-2015 11:50 AM

Ha! That's good advise to test moisture in the pot. I always stick my finger into it, but you solution is cleaner. I'll copy that idea!

ThePinkCucumber 09-10-2015 12:32 AM

Luizacft - most of my pots are see-through, there is no problem in seeing whether it's moist enough, but for the coloured ones I definitely keep a skewer around - better safe than sorry! :)

RosieC 09-26-2015 02:38 PM

Really pretty!

Tindomul 11-16-2016 12:29 PM

Very nice.

ThePinkCucumber 11-16-2016 11:03 PM

Thank you! :)

charlesf6 11-16-2016 11:41 PM

Had to go back pretty far in this thread to find out what "Bob" was all about but I found it!

I'm always on the lookout for a larger coffee mug.
