First flower of the season, more to come:

Very nice. Make sure you let that bay rest for the winter.

It's outside, in the ground just outside of Phila PA. Winter rest is not a problem!

I am jealous of your naturally available options. I had to buy a little fridge for that purpose.

No-Pro-mwa 06-23-2015 12:13 PM

They bloom?

Indeed they do!

SFLguy 06-23-2015 01:21 PM

Nice! Bring on the carnivores haha

ALToronto 06-25-2015 12:24 PM

How much below freezing can they handle? And do they need soil conditions on the acidic or alkaline side?

Leafmite 06-25-2015 12:43 PM

Acidic, I believe. I don't know about temperatures. I put mine in a cold window and hoped for the best. They bloomed this spring and have been putting out new 'leaves'.
I cannot grow them outside where I live, not reliably. I would have to take measures to protect them. Some people who live in colder climates make their bog garden a little lower in the ground and, in autumn, cover the entire thing with a heavy board, lay plastic over the board and cover the entire thing with leaves. In the spring, they uncover the entire thing. Sort of like growing figs....

SFLguy 06-25-2015 12:47 PM

Yes they need acidic media without any nutrients in it (I.e sphagnum, sphagnum peat, perlite, etc.)
To give you an idea, I know someone that grows them along with other temperate carnivores outdoors year round in zone 6b

I just acquired a VFT that a friend grows it outside year round in the Boston area.

Venus Flytraps or their flowers?

Tindomul 11-16-2016 12:14 PM

Sorry I meant the flowers.

ronaldhanko 11-16-2016 03:28 PM

They are relatively easy to grow and flower even under lights if you meet their requirements. We grow them in live sphagnum and they bloom nicely.

Tindomul 11-16-2016 03:38 PM

Yea, last time I tried these I did nothing of the sort for them. Of Course they died rather quickly.
