OMG! My Beautiful Pink Vanda is Spiking!!!

This is a NOID vanda bought from HD in July last year, so I will see it in bloom again almost exactly a year from that.

It spiked about two month ago, but due to my lazy watering it stopped growing any further. What a disappointment after all that watering for many months! lol

Then I noticed another spike staring deep in the leaf pocket about a few weeks ago, and I've been watering every day (or very close to it).
The spike is now well above the leaf pocket and I'm very excited about it.

My worry is that I will be gone much of the next month and I plan on leaving this plant at a friend's. Not sure if the spike will make it without my intensive care.
but really, it will be very upsetting if I see the spike dead.

A little bit of my culture.
This plant came in a large acrylic vase with no mix.
When I water, (which happens about every morning usually although I did get lazy a few times last fall into winter when I wasn't sure if I were to keep the plant, and plant did dehydrate a bit,) I take the whole container
to the bath tub and fill up to about half the container, that's where all the roots are. I would occasionally add fertilizer at about 50 ppm N.
I leave the plant in the water (or fertilizer solution) for anywhere between 10 min up to two hours or more.
Two hours or more is when I did not water often last year and the plant suffered, so when I did water it, I watered it GOOD, which helps. Or I forget about the plant and go out all day. hahaha
When I am good and water nearly everyday, I soak it for about half an hour or so.
The plant sit in the sunny south window with no curtain, but most of the plant body is inside the vase still and so far so good.

The last photo shows flowers of this plant from last summer. They are gorgeous!!!

With the speed it is growing, I think I can keep the plant for about two more years. After that, it will grow way above the vase and I will not like to deal with it.
What a pity I don't have a greenhouse to hang this up and just hose down everyday.
Oh, well...

Wow! You will certainly have a wonderful show! :)

Ooo can't wait to see those flowers, they are very beautiful.

Maybe try a large clay pot with chunky bark when it gets "too big".

When it gets too big, chop the top off, if you can get several roots on the top section you will most likely have two decent plants, the bottom section will re shoot.

Oh, that's right & mail me a section. :) Just kidding. Good idea though about splitting the plant if it has the upper roots.

Wow pretty.

Vandas are high maintenance but i find them very straightforward and dependable bloomers.

CR7cristiano 05-28-2015 03:41 PM

Good luck! Although such a sudden change of environment can cause spikes to abort. Vandas are very fussy about being moved about.

Nice. I need to try this with my vanda.

No, I don't want this plant out of the vase, hence I will not keep it once it grows above the vase too much.
The leaves are quite long and would take up too much space it if it wasn't inside this container. plus, all the roots would also be wondering around, which I hate epiphytes for. :((

Maybe I should have kept the blue one too which had much shorter leaf span. Oh, well...too late now.

Great idea, but that will be when the plant gets very tall. not sure if it will be here by then. hahahaha

It looks a lot like kultana's version of Somsri Pink.

NYCorchidman 05-29-2015 02:56 PM

There are a couple of lookalikes, but can't tell, of course.

I contacted the seller on the lable it came with, but they never responded.
Ghost company (or fake phone number and email), or they just don't care about customer service.

Vanda Pachara Delight Pink

LovePhals 05-29-2015 06:19 PM

Yay!! I still love this vanda and will home it when it gets to big.. my offer still stands :waving!! I LOVE that pink color also and have been looking for a good pink vanda but don't really run into them.
You should try coerulea, b/c clearly you do well with vandas. The leaf span is really short and I find my coerulea very easy growing. I have spotted leaves that have red tinge I think from high light so I am hoping for a spike soon. Really good job with her!

NYCorchidman 05-29-2015 09:53 PM

Ok, I'll remember you. :)

RosieC 06-12-2015 02:24 PM

Lovely!

NYCorchidman 06-28-2015 02:44 PM

Oh, well...
The flowers are all open, but they look nothing like last year's bloom.
It seems as if they took after ascocentrum parent this time. Flowers are tiny and the color is very much washed out.
So much for all that watering and anticipation.

:( That's a shame.

That appears to be one happy vanda. Love those roots!

I know, right?
I'm not going to keep this.
I mean it might as well bloom "normal" again in the future, but with all the work it takes me to keep this big plant going, I'm just not up for it.
What if it blooms ugly again?

Time to be happy with my little "Vanda" now. :)

Yeah, it's been growing very well.

No-Pro-mwa 06-29-2015 11:52 AM

That's to bad. I wonder why it did this.

hanzy08 06-29-2015 08:20 PM

actually I have an ascocenda princess mikasa pink that also bloomed this way this time of the year. small washed out flowers. more like baby pink than raspberry color. I think it has something to do with the temps.. cause last winter when it bloomed the flowers were bigger and brighter.

NYCorchidman 06-30-2015 11:04 PM

Well, mine was bought in the midsummer, and it came from South Florida, so I don't think that is it.
