planted one of my catts in a basket trying something new.i'm watering every second day and misting as often as possibel.anything else i should be doing?

mtorchid 05-15-2015 08:19 AM

Looks good! You might stabilize it with fishing line to keep it from wobbling. I have some Catts and a couple of Phals in wooden "vanda baskets" with clay pellets (LECA) and they do great. But, as you mentioned, frequent waterings and mistings is necessary.

wintergirl 05-15-2015 11:11 AM

Too me it looks a little deep in the basket. Healthy looking catt :)

Fairorchids 05-18-2015 02:08 PM

Agree, looks a little too deep. Also, since this plant sends up PBulbs very close together, the basket appears to be somewhat oversized.

Do you know what the basket is made from? Many decorative baskets are made from materials that deteriorate rapidly when exposed to high humidity (there is a reason most orchid baskets are made from Teak or plastic).

oscar freak 05-19-2015 04:52 AM

i moved some of bark out so the top roots are a little exposed.it was a flower basket i'm re using.does being in a basket not negate the preference of a small container as waterlogging is highly unlikely?now the plant will be able to grow unhindered by space and repottings.

Fairorchids 05-19-2015 02:09 PM

I am sure that the plant will do well. My concern would be whether the basket will hold up to being watered regularly. If basket materials break down too soon, you will have to replace before the bark breaks down.

i'v got some wire mesh baskets but they're not so visually appealing, should be ok for a while, while i make some other arrangemnets

33014orchid 05-21-2015 01:03 PM

Nice! Good luck

oscar freak 08-26-2015 04:53 AM

its spring here now temps have risen nicely and i'v moved him outside to the verandah where he gets the same sun but just a lot more air movement.how should i go about the watering now?

ThePinkCucumber 08-26-2015 08:37 AM

I'd make sure it dries out slightly between waterings, but never goes too dry for too long. Summer is almost here, we need to water more often :)

oscar freak 08-26-2015 08:54 AM

i gave it a good soaking this morning, will check when i get home how dry it is to see how to carry on.its in a coarse bark mix in a container that cant hold any water im gonna imagine its dry already.i'm thinking daily watering is going to be needed

ThePinkCucumber 08-26-2015 09:17 AM

My phals are also potted like that and I do soak every day in summer, every 2-3 days in winter.

Good for you in trying something different. The basket may last longer than you think. If not, well, you have learned something, and the only problem might be that you have to repot sooner than you thought.

If you never experiment, you never learn.

It may well be that you have to water every day in the summer. I do. In the winter I have two wet days a week whenn they are wetted well, and the other five are damp days when they are just misted, with a little water running down the stem.

At least you can't overwater, eh?

Experimenting is definitely the way to go. Whatever works for your neighbour may not necessarily work for you.

Yeah, it always pays to remember that.

oscar freak 08-26-2015 10:14 AM

ja thats what im trying to find what works for me.so far i'v found that a plain bark mix worked perfectly for my phals.my dens are are doing well in both a bark/stone and plain stone mix with once a week watering.the cyms on the other hand did not do well in both the plain bark and plain stone but if im honest i dont think its the potting media but my watering in both failure and success.

Welcome to Orchid Board. It is probably best to start your own thread. You will get more specific advice for your situation. After 5 posts you can attach small size photos which are a big help for people to see how your plant is doing. Give info such as what it is potted in and anything about your growing conditions.

very happy to report that when I was watering this morning I noticed flower buds in the new growth

Leafmite 10-08-2015 11:06 AM

Congratulations!
I grow most of mine in plastic basket pots or plastic Vanda baskets. I am not surprised that your orchid is happy. :)

I distinctly notice the lovely finishing touch... Superb!

i'v had success(in that they're still alive) and even flower now in two different mediums.so where to now with the next ones?

ThePinkCucumber 10-28-2015 04:50 AM

I say go ahead and experiment away - that is the best way to learn :)

RolandoJrGreenThumb 10-28-2015 10:28 AM
