Project 2015 Spring: Dendrobium cucumerinum

I think many of you bought this cute little Aussie beside of the winner plant.

I got mine from Currlin orchids at a show last week.
It was already mounted so I just had to hang it to my other orchids under the lights.
I a week or two they will all move outside in the garden and hang in a tree until the end of September.
Watered daily with very diluted fertilizer (~180 ppm tds)

It is so cute.

Dendrobium cucumerinum (project16 [side] - spring 2015)

Yes it is :-)
And really tiny. The piece of wood is maybe 2-3 inches long

Thanks for making the tread sticky. I asked Camille to do so but then it was already done :-)

Leafmite 05-09-2015 04:06 PM

Very nice!
Here is mine, from Andy's Orchids. It is currently outside, hoping for a little rain. :)

Skycat 05-09-2015 04:40 PM

I'm thinking about ordering one from Clown Alley and they're having a Mother's Day sale which I JUST found out about and today is the last day. Where do I enter the code when I'm checking out? Is it where it says "Add a note to your order"? I don't want to commit to buying the plant and miss where I was supposed to apply the sale code.

camille1585 05-09-2015 04:54 PM

Great, now I'm regretting that I didn't order it.....

Skycat 05-10-2015 01:06 AM

Well, so much for that Clown Alley discount, so now I kind of feel like I'll never be able to get one of these, even though I'll probably end up ordering one by tomorrow anyway, but then that'll just make me stress EVEN MORE about how much money I'm not making.

RandomGemini 05-10-2015 01:08 AM

Got mine too! It fell out of its pot in transit though. I'll post some pics of it tomorrow. Mine came potted in bark. I will probably keep it that way.

hbozeman 05-10-2015 09:47 AM

@Skycat. I'm sure a phone call to John would solve this problem.

well I don't know if I can join, as I have had mine a few months. I'm not real good with posting pictures but I will try. When I first got it, it went into a decline and is just throwing out some new roots. It is such a cute plant,I really don't care if it blooms lol

It is just terrible how orchids are so tempting!

I have seen postings where the blooms are negligible and their fragrance is odiferous. Mine got sunburned, so I am seeing a couple of the leaves or cucumbers(?) turning yellow but also starting to see new growth. I am watering it more frequently.

Tschimm 05-11-2015 04:54 AM

They (the cucumbers) turned yellow without a warning ?

How do you grow it beside of light ? Mounted or potted ?

MattWoelfsen 05-11-2015 05:01 AM

It took about three weeks. This is mounted on a small branch. It was under a skylight, okay for winter but now in spring, the light was too bright, so I moved it to another location. When the sun comes up, I'll have to take a picture.

Got mine last week. It is mounted on a cedar shingle.

RandomGemini 05-12-2015 10:55 PM

Here's my little guy. Fell out of the pot in transit. Potted it back up, but I may choose to repot it in moss if it doesn't thrive for me in bark. It's pretty low humidity in the house.

Those are some nice, healthy, large clumps! :)

Arrived this afternoon. Looks healthy with some new root growths. Maybe need to remount it.

shadytrake 05-17-2015 12:16 AM

I wasn't going to join this side project, but my pre-order vendor brought one to the show thinking I might like it. It is HUGE so of course I couldn't resist. It is mounted on a 4.5" fern slab and the roots look very good. I will likely leave it alone, but I might add moss to the back of the slab to encourage the roots to dig into the slab to reach the moss. Picture to come tomorrow.

Pictures! I am growing fond of the way it looks. I thought it was on tree fern, but it is actually on cork, which I like better. Cork retains more moisture IMHO.

Tschimm 05-18-2015 10:09 AM

Wow. That's huge compared to mine ! And well established.

Leafmite 05-18-2015 01:27 PM

Mine really needs to catch up to all of these! :|

shadytrake 05-30-2015 12:46 PM

I was reading my The Dendrobiums book and it seems that this orchid grows on the dry side during the day, but gets damp nights. A bit weird. I think I was watering mine a bit too much.

I'm going to move it closer to the best air movement.

RandomGemini 05-31-2015 11:32 AM

Lots of new root growth happening on my cuke! I have left mine sitting kind of above the medium, with the roots dipping down into it and the rhizome (I think that's what it is anyway) sitting on top where it can get air and I am seeing 5 new root growths.

shadytrake 05-31-2015 03:48 PM

Found a millipede munching on the roots of the smaller section of the plant so we gently removed the undermoss. It is not needed anyway as the roots are established. There was a snail too. Both are dead now. The bigger section with no moss is doing great and already shows the roots as bright green vs the ugly black soggy they were looking like yesterday. The extra ventilation obviously is the ticket during the day.

Leafmite 05-31-2015 03:59 PM

Mine isn't doing very much. I saw a tiny bloom and got excited but then realized it was on the prenticei. Opps. I keep hoping new growth will start. Mine looks so small compared to many of the others. :|

nenella 05-31-2015 05:55 PM

Nice plants! They really look cool and this plant has really grown on me after seeing all of your pics!
I think I'm going to have to get one, :D

shadytrake 06-15-2015 08:53 PM

As expected, the ugly soggy part died back. The other part rotates between looking too dry or looking wet. I'm not exactly sure if my care is right. I don't see any die back on the cuke leaves so I guess that is a good thing.

RandomGemini 06-15-2015 09:00 PM

I have no idea if mine is right either. I drench it once a week and let the bottom of the pot standing in a quarter inch of water for a day or two. When the medium is mostly dry, I do it again. Lots of new root growth.

Leafmite 06-15-2015 10:09 PM

Mine is growing roots and the new growths seem to have finished growing. It has been in the 80's and very humid here, with plenty of rain. So far, it seems happy.

Tschimm 06-16-2015 11:16 AM

Dendrobium cucumerinum (project16 [side] - spring 2015)

Mine is also doing ok. Not much but ok.
I decided to let it inside this year under the lights with some seedlings. Next summer it will move outside with all the others

I now have a bunch of new leaves happening!! When I saw them, I shouted, "I have new cukes!!!" My family didn't see what all the excitement was about! LOL!

What fun are they? I have the same problem, dear hubby is never exited for me at all, whats up with that. When you get time from your puppy rearing, you will have to put up a picture.

Leafmite 07-16-2015 11:22 AM

Mine has a new growth, too. It seems to be faring well so far.
My family always seems rather pained if I try to show them one of my blooming orchids. On occasion, one of them might muster a polite smile and forced compliment and I have to consider that the closest thing to a victory....

shadytrake 07-28-2015 02:15 PM

Well I cooked my cuke. I accidentally left the mount hanging in the wrong place after watering and the sun made fried cukes. Dang.

No-Pro-mwa 07-28-2015 02:51 PM

Oh that's so sad, poor little cuccy.

disalover 07-28-2015 03:05 PM

A nursery in my region might have some they got from plantae. will cost more but no shipping. Eek

Leafmite 07-28-2015 10:41 PM

I am sad to hear what happened to your cuke. I hope you will replace it. I wasn't so sure about it when I bought it but I really love this one, now. Mine is doing well. We've been having higher temperatures and, finally, sunny days, so I have been giving it a good soak once a day and fertilizing it twice a week.

shadytrake 07-28-2015 11:14 PM

Maybe...but I just joined the mini-catt project. :D

I am trying to stay away from that project. I have far too many Cattleyas. I keep telling myself that I need to get rid of a few more but I just cannot. :|
