Noid throw away Brassia

A NOID Trader Joe plant from my friend's trash heap. This thing has been growing in my patio for 3 years now. Every year two or more sets of blooms, and just add water kind of care.
Very spidery kind of effect, and it opened just before Halloween :)

I hope my spider orchid will grow to be like that some day. I bought mine at trader joes and I almost killed it. I left it in the car during a hot day. It got really bad sunburn. But after a little care and repot I have new growth.

Mine looks just like yours. They are so cool and smell nice.

I love it! I've wanted this one for so long.
But I'm so bad with brassia

Hey Ordphien, where are you? I live in Hollywood and grow this plant in my patio, and honest to god, I just add water 2 times a week in summer and once a week or less in winter depend on rain. It grows and flowers right next to my cymbidiums. You should give it another try.

I'm in south orange county.
If I water twice a week they die.
Oncidium, brassia, intergenerics. They all die for me.
I have a green brassia, I was doing better. But the new growths roots aborted when they hit the media.
Which is always the reason they die.
I can never get the roots to penetrate the media before they die.

I have several of these now, but I got my first one at TJs and the plant is gigantic. If it outgrows its current pot, it's going to have to go into a 1 gallon bucket. LOL!

It was pot bound in a 5" pot that was packed with probably 10 pbulbs. I repotted it when it was done blooming and now, a few months later, it's in spike again with 5 spikes this time. LOVE these orchids! Yours is beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing your photos!

Wow! Awesome!

Oooo.. I have this NOID from TJ. I hope mine ends up looking like that! It has new growths now that the blooms have died.. although it looks different than new bulbs, we will see what they are.

Hmm.. wish we could help you with that one. What media do you use? Doesn't seem like you are overwatering.

I think I too have this one :D
So do you grow it in the shade in your CA patio?! It looks like it gets at least SOME direct sun! I had no idea I could throw it outside. I have a den that won't bloom unless it gets those same burn spots ;-)

RandomGemini 11-10-2014 10:07 PM

Some of the brassias do best if they are grown outdoors for at least part of the year, but I'm not sure which ones are like that. Mine seem to do just fine being grown indoors year round, so far. I have mine in a southeast facing window, or they are growing under lights with my oncidiums.

By outdoors, does this generally mean shade all or most of the day in a patio?

RandomGemini 11-12-2014 01:31 PM

I don't know. I grow mine next to my African violets. It's a good amount of light, but I use the larger plants to shade the AVs a little. I would say that it's near cattleya light, but of shorter duration. We have sun for about 8.5 hours a day right now.

It grows on the patio floor that faces north but exposed. So very bright indirect light.
