Bulbophyllum medusae--then and now

My medusae is in bloom, a little larger and more mature than last year. The plant is still in its 4-inch plastic basket with coarse bark as the media. This is the plant one year ago when it bloomed in November 2013.

What a spectacular looking plant!!! Nice to have a comparison with the previous year, the difference between the two years is amazing. Looks to have triwe as many blooms this year.

Everytime someone posts photos of this orchid, I drool and wish I had one. Though I have yet to come across one at any of the vendors I have ordered from.

Beautiful!!!!! Great job growing!!! Do you grow it in a basket? Do you make your own baskets???? If so out of what. Thanks.

2015 Version

My medusae is currently in bloom with 29 inflorescences. Unfortunately I did not count the number of blooms last year but from the photos it was less than this year. The plant is still in its 4-inch plastic basket. It will be difficult to remove the plant from the basket so I guess I'll just leave it be and let it grow out some more.

My goodness I love this plant. Yes please share. How much sun is it in? By the looks of the leaves you have yours in more sun than I have mine. I have not had mine for long but it has not done a thing since I got it. Absolutely nothing just setting there. I guess I should be glad it is still alive.

AndreaK 11-13-2015 03:18 PM

Amazing! The shape reminds me of a lovely chandelier light.

My Green Pets 11-13-2015 03:35 PM

Now Mel, be honest -- did you run a comb through those before photographing? :)

Needless to say, it's really lovely. I guess you could just set the entire 4-inch basket into a larger one and fill in with your potting medium.

Optimist 11-13-2015 07:49 PM

looks like fireworks. Absolutely beautiful plant!

The "hairs" on the medusae are very fragile. They would break off if you ran a comb through them. I let them fall naturally. Unfortunately, the flowers are very short lived. I removed the dying flowers this morning. The photo below with the flowers removed shows why it would be difficult to place the plant with its 4-inch basket into a larger basket. There are plantlets growing out the sides and bottom. I plan to leave it in the 4-inch basket, let it grow out some more and see what happens. At the top of the wire hanger, I have a swivel which allows me to rotate the plant when I water.

Thanks all for your kind comments. The plant is growing outside under 50% shade cloth. I water it almost daily. It gets fertilized weekly all year round. Fortunately, I don't have to contend with freezing weather. We consider it freezing in Hawaii when the temperature dips to the low 60s.

Thanks a bunch. I sure do hope mine will start a new growth soon.
