Miniature orchids that thrive in high humidity terrarium

I need a few suggestions for miniature orchids that can tolerate high humidity environments with frequent mistings. I will be building a couple of new vivariums and want to splurge a little. These will grow on eipiweb.

If you can point me where to get them, that would be great too...unless somone here has some for sale, which would be even better !!!

lepanthes89 01-02-2008 10:51 PM

Most of the Pleurothallids will not only tolerate that type of environment but will thrive there.Make sure the drainage is good though.A couple of other suggestions :Mediocalcar decoratum (mat forming w/goldfish red flowers.),most of the smaller bulbophyllums etc, etc.

FinnBar 01-03-2008 08:52 AM

Haraella odorata would just love that. maybe also Schoenorchis pachyacris and fragrans?

Marty 01-03-2008 10:50 AM

Haraella odorata seems to be the top favourite on OB ... any ideas where I can get it at decent price??? would be nice to get it in Canada

Ross 01-03-2008 11:20 AM

Almost any of the Angraecoids will take to this if mounted. If embedded in the background you may have some rot problems. All of mine thrive under high humidity (90-99%) with 5 second misting every 4-5 hours along with daily dunking to fertilize. They do take a while of moping to get adjusted to new home though (even Haraella). You can check my plant list for recommendations. Don't know about shipping to Canada, tho. Ship them to me and I'll take care of them for you

Tindomul 01-03-2008 11:47 AM

I agree, Haraella and small Bulbophyllums.

Dorothy 01-03-2008 03:35 PM

Paramount is out of stock on the haraella :( - Species
but maybe you can call to see if there is one hanging around ;)
J&L Orchids has them for $18 .. :) J&L Orchids ~ Our Fragrant Orchid Selections
but they are in Connecticut in the USA :(

Ross 01-03-2008 03:40 PM

Come on now! Can't we all get more creative? I know Haraella is a must-have amongst OB members, but there's got to be some other choices besides this or Bulbos! This is "our leader" we're trying to help out. I was hoping all the tank gurus would "pull out the stops" for Marty. If he's willing to sink a few bucks into new tanks, then we should live vicariously thru him and suggest all the new 'chids we lust for that would do well in wet environments. Aren't there some others? :scratchhead:

Restrepias... Pl. grobyi, Pl. brighamii. Cattleya luteola.

How is that?

Rob

Marty 01-03-2008 04:41 PM

hehe...Ross...you're too much...

Zephyrus Orchids is in my back yard...I should go see what they have.

littlefrog 01-03-2008 05:11 PM

John is a good guy and a great grower. Good idea to go.

:bowing Hi Marty

Here's what I have in my little Exo-Terra. None have bloomed yet but it hasn't been that long. They're all looking great and growing well:

Leptotes bicolor
Renanopsis Manila
Neo falcata
Den rigidum
Amesiella monticola
Dinema (Encyclia) polybulbon - this one is REALLY happy!
Den oligophyllum
Schoenorchis fragrans
Bulb Doris Dukes

:coverlaugh: The one in the tank is a small division that came apart from the larger one out in the room. :D

lepanthes89 01-03-2008 11:54 PM

Also many of the jewel orchids,(not Ludisia discolor ,though):Macodes,Goodyera,Zeuxine,Cranichis, etc.

Marty 01-04-2008 07:28 AM

Yeah, I'll try to put a jewel into that tank too. Thanks for the suggestions, greatly appreciate it...now I just have to t rack some of these down.

From my experience with a variety of miniatures in wardian cases, I can definitely provide a list of suggestions, but what are the temperatures going to be in the vivariums? I could rattle off a list of pleuros, but most of them will be cool growing.

For a more intermediate species with wondefully FRAGRANT (of lemon) flowers, that takes up a wee tiny amount of space, I suggest Buccella (Masd) ophioglossa. Small flowers, but they are very noticeable against the green leaves and they are very very very fragrant. Did I mention fragrance?

That's awesome...and it's intermediate??? :dance13:

Ross 01-04-2008 03:20 PM

Not sure everyone's willing to accept new naming IOSPE PHOTOS

This is a cool growing spp so might not meet with Marty's needs

Eh, jay is rarely current within the last few years of taxonomy, which is completely understandable with the size of his undertaking.

As for cool growing, I personally have grown it intermediate and cool. Seemed equally happy with night temps in the sixties and the fifties. Day temps were into the low 80's, when I grew it intermediate.

If you want a Masd that will tolerate occasional highs up to the 90's, M. sprucei (I haven't learned it's new genus, yet) is wonderful. Cheery yellow flowers borne successively on just-longer-than-the-leaves inflorescences. Small plant, too.

Of course M. livingstonea and floribunda are tiny and grow well in warmer temps. Some dracs are somewhat temperature tolerant, too.

Marty 01-04-2008 08:29 PM

My temps will be around 65-70F at night and about 75-80F during the day...humidity 90%+ and 10 hrs of compact fluorescent 6500K lights.

Orchidflowerchild 01-04-2008 08:52 PM

Ah, well, then. How about some leafless? Maybe not the ghost, but some of the other leafless are quite interesting, and pretty much all warm growing. Aslo, small angraecoids. Amesiella, Aerangis (some of them)... Definitely some of the little bulbos. Bulb. lemniscatoides has weird little flowers with little feathery tassels. Sophronitis cernua and pterocarpa should also do well. You might also look into less-common laeliinae. Gah, I can't think of names, right now, I have a headache. I'll check my resources and get back to you.

Ross 01-04-2008 08:54 PM

I still stick with Angraecoids. They're you best bet. Want to see some pics?

Marty 01-05-2008 08:39 AM

sure, lets see them

Maybe you can imbed the mount into the background? That way the roots can still be free to do their thing. Just a thought.

cb977 01-05-2008 09:09 AM

Ross, your tank looks wonderful!

I feel like I've seen that first pic someplace... :hmm Where could it have been? :scratchhead: Oh yeah!
It's on my wall right now on the OB January calendar!!!

:dance13: :dance13: :dance13:

FinnBar 01-05-2008 09:11 AM

Marty, my temperatures and humidity are exactly what you have intended and my Aerangis are loving it.
Great photos Ross!

Orchidflowerchild 01-05-2008 06:49 PM

How about Laelia lundii? THat may be too high light. I do think Aerangis and such are a great idea. Dyakia (Asco.) hendersoniana has great color, if you want that. Also Cadetias are cute. Maxillaria uncata is a fun one! Ionopsis is a cute oncidium alliance genus.
