Can anybody tell what this might become?

I found this, in much worse shape, at an estate sale (glorified garage sale ;) ). It was not potted, just lying on it's side on a shallow dish. I grabbed it, and the dish, for 2 bucks! It's looking great, has a spike coming up, and I have absolutely no clue what it is. It's the next level of NOID!!!
|
looks like a cattleya alliance something...but I can't tell you any more than that. maybe some of the experts will know. the new growth looks good!
|
I have to agree it looks like a cattleya. My cattleya has the same leave shape and texture. Can't wait for the surprise bloom.
|
I'm also guessing a unifoliate Cattleya. If it has a spike coming, you won't have to wait too long for an answer!

That's kind of what I thought but since there are so many kinds out there and this one is much more established than the other catts I have, I wasn't sure, it looks a little different.
Happy to see the spike! Can't wait for the surprise :) |
Ooo-ooo-ooo! Found a second spike on this baby this morning! Yippee!
There are spikes on a few other plants too, I think the total is 7, so far. 2 on this plant, 1 on my B Little Stars, 1 on my Onc Aloha Iwanaga and 3 of my others (though I'm not sure which ones, but definitely either Pot Miya's Beauty Red Radiance or Blc Hawaiian Passion Carmela) are all shooting up with spikes! |
Awesome girl, you have found the right formula...keep up the good work. I keep looking for spikes, just see lots of new growth...which is a good thing.. :)
|
Definately from the Cattleya alliance. Wow, lots of new leads developing, and more leads = more flowers!
I am guessing RED flowers. |
Is that just a wild guess or do you know something I don't (which would be very easy ;) ) ?
|
Actually I am guessing red flowers and that it is an Slc. NOID!
It could be an educated guess, or simply the idle typing of a madman at 8 am! Perhaps something like this......pretty hard to tell from an unlabelled plant though. http://www.sqr.or.jp/usr/fujiengei/orchid/WL5620.jpg |
That'd be acceptable :)!
I'm so curious. I don't know if it has no tag because it's a NOID, or if the tag is missing just because a number of people lived in the house while the lady was in the nursing home and they didn't take care of it. Like I said, it was just lying on it's side with no pot, no medium...no nothing! |
It certainly looks like it responding very nicely to it's new home.
|
Whatever it is you sure have made it happy! Look at that sucker grow! :)
|
Well, I scrolled to the end of this string to see the photos of the flowers - come on, let's see them!
Regards - Nancy |
Nothing yet...it's making me crazy! As soon as something happens, believe me...there will be pictures posted :D
|
Definatly from the Cattleya Alliance, Id say that it needs to Bloom to get a good ID,
But Honestly I would doubt to get more than a Genus ID since so many Species / Hybrids look alike . Todd |
I see the light!

Here's an update on my mystery orchid!
It's been growing like crazy since I originally posted my question here. All the new growths have progressed happily. I recently found a sheath with something iside! Oh boy!!! After keeping close watch on it and seeing nothing, I looked again last week and the sheath was turning brown and starting to shrivel. I decided to help my baby along...I snipped open the sheath and found 2 tiny little buds, one promptly fell out but the other has tripled in size in a week's time! I expect to see something bloom very soon!   |
That's great! I cannot wait to see what it looks like :)
|
I see you have it potted in Cocoa Puffs.

It's only a funny if it's something else...what is it? I got a plant at our swap potted in the same thing.
Well, it sure *tasted* like Cocoa Puffs. |
Wow-what a find! This is fun! :D
Carol |
:hmm Cocoa puffs as a growing medium?
If only they didn't get so mushy when wet ;) |
I am with you Nancy I scrolled to the end to see if the blooms were appearing and making their first OB debut to see "cocoa puff's" what a :shock:er. Can't wait for the finale' Sue.
|
The new bud gets a bit bigger every day...I'm hoping to see something new soon  It was thrilling to get it back to health but to actually have a bloom on the way is exhilarating

This is exciting! Are those frills I'm seeing just starting to emerge?

Does anybody care to venture a guess? :scratchhead:
It's in a 6 inch pot... |
ooooh, nice colors!!
|
The way the p'bulbs look, might be a C. walkeriana cross. Very pretty!
|
I'm thinking that when I walk out into the room today, this bud will have opened for me...
Of course, there will be a picture :coverlaugh: |
Okay folks, time to educate me

The bud opened today and there are problems. I'd like to know what might have caused this and what I can do to avoid it in the future;
First, the petals were overlapped. I had to "nudge" the right one into place. See first thumbnail pic: Second, in the center, at the bottom of the lip, there's a hard white spot. What could that be? See second thumbnail pic: The pics don't show the true colors, which are very pretty but they do show the problems |
Sue, its not fully opened yet! Why not wait till it opens all the way? Maybe it will correct itself. The colors are sooo cool!
|
Nah, there's a problem. Maybe not with the shape or color, but that little white spot should not be there.
|
On the lip???
|
Yup! It's hard, like a calcium deposit or something.
