Positive Experience With Home Depot
I just wanted to pass along a positive experience I had yesterday at the local Home Depot. While looking through the garden center to see if they had any orchids particularly in need of a home I noticed that all the Id tags had been removed.since I purchased my second ever orchids there about a month ago WITH a cryptic, but present, tag I wondered what was up. After checking with an employee I learned their policy was not to remove tags. Knowing how important tags are to collectors and how important the bottom line is to such businesses I mentioned that this lack lowered the value of the plants. I was referred to customer serviceand ended up talking to the store manager. He said he should talk to the distributed and make sure tags come with the plants in the future. Who ever actually removed them, I suspect tags will be much more likely in the future there.
As a side note, the cryptic tag on my own orchids from there was translated over email by someone from the nursery who shipped it so my baby is no longer a NOID! It had lost its flowers when purchased, but now I know what to expect next winter. It's a Phal. sogo yenlin "Coffee". Hopefully I will again find tagged orchids at this store in the future and be able to track down the identities of more likely plants. Where I live my options are severely limited for local purchases. |

yes the distributor puts in the generic orchid care tags and removes the growers tags when they box them up for retail delivery. I dunno why, but they do.
home depot today had the phals out in the sun. I dont thinks tags are going to help them tomorrow :) |
Oooo. Time for some deeeeep discounts Rocket.
|
Kari_Stein what was the original price and the sale price?
|
The original price of the one I bought (with tag) was something like $9.99 or $11.99. I paid $5 for it without blooms. It's a mini Phal. The ones I saw the other day were full price with blooms, both full size and mini.
If the tags are removed by the distributor normally, why did mine have its' tag? I haven't checked back yet, but I will soon to see if their new stock has tags or not. If the store manager pushes, as he said he would, and other store managers do too, maybe this practice can be changed. |
I noticed about 3 weeks ago 4 the first time my home Depot had pals w tags I was impressed. Good for you by the way!

Sogo Yenlin 'Coffee' is such a cute hybrid.
It is truly miniature. The flowers are dark magenta with slight white margin along the edge of the petals. Happy Growing! |

That sounds beautiful. Hopefully I'll see them myself sometime in the next year or so.

I have talked to the SALES DISTRIBUTOR of my Home Depot about that issue, 1 week later plants came in with tags, then after that none. Lowes on the other hand is real good about it, but so is there supplier GUBLERS orchids. I think THD gets Rocket Farms orchids, Matsui is another no tagger

WAHOOO! My first blooms!
Now I have to figure out how to add pictures to posts. |

Kari, I read this post a few days ago so on Tuesday I decided to venture on over to HD and wasn't I pleasantly surprised to find that our store had JUST put out a new batch of some really nice plants...WITH TAGS! I was so excited - I wanted them all, but only left with one. Oh, and two beautiful Christmas Cactus (Cacti? Whatever..)
Look at my Vuyl. Carnivale 'Rio'. So pretty! |
Now if Low*'s would follow suit, we'd be sitting pretty! BTW, not all HD's are doing it...I have two nearby and one does; the other doesn't. Weird.
|
Good luck trying to post pictures. I still can't figure it out on my iPad. Facebook is so easy, why can't Orchid Board be easy?

But iPad will only let you upload one picture at a time. Good luck! |
CA2FLxplant. Thanks for the simple explanation. I too a screen pic for reference!
|
Happy to be of assistance, when I can! ;)

Every time since there haven't been tags. GRRRR. I even explained to the manager my trip after finding the one with tags that they would sell better with tags than without because they had more value. I also told him I knew the place the grower left the tags since I'd spoken to them. He said they came in without tags, but he'd ask the distributor to leave them. I guess it's time to remind him about it.

Kari, I thought of you and this subject again yesterday afternoon when I was looking at a little rescue den. I bought last week, and lo and behold, stuffed waaaaay in at the base of the little guy planted in a coconut was something hard and white that wasn't a root...it was a tag hiding down in there, barely visible! I now know I'm the proud owner of a Den. Airy Blue!!

CA2F,
That's great! Kari |

First blooms! They're from the Phal that started this thread, and I didn't have to wait nearly as long as I thought.

Sweet!! Just a heads up, looks Like you might lose some of those buds with yellowing at the base. (I hope I'm wrong!) The smaller buds nearer the tip look like they'll be okay, though. Enjoy that baby - congrats!!
|
No that is just the old leaf part. The roots and new leaves are great. Keep up the good work.

I think you are right. The buds with yellow stems will likely fall off, but the rest looks good.
