I think Vandas do better than other orchids in my growing area, and I grow them like airplants, with no media and free hanging roots. So i don't have to worry about rots and decaying media.
Only issue is watering these thirsty plants.
The vandas will tell you when they are healthy when you see all the new root growth.
I usually only buy vandas with evidence of many old flowering spikes, because such plants flowers very frequently.

Fairorchids 06-06-2014 07:14 AM

In the 2nd photo there is a small orange non-Vanda orchid in the background. What is that one?

Vanda lover 06-06-2014 10:18 AM

Gorgeous! I really love that scarlet red one.

It's a Epic. Volcano Trick 'Orange Fire', a very rewarding orchid that is constantly in flower, and there are usually lots of flowers.

What a beautiful bunch!!!

Can you grow them outside year around?

I've only been to your country once and it was hot and humid. I believe it was around April, which is early summer there, isn't it??

Thanks. The weather here is very suitable for growing vandas as we get perpetual summer. It is hot, humid, sunny all year round, so vandas can be grown outdoor. It rains quite frequently so the vandas may not even need to be watered sometimes.

After the vandas last flowered in May a few months back, they are all putting up spikes again !!!

It's been raining for quite a while now, and some of the vandas have flowered. Hopefully, they will not be too badly battered.

Here's the magic wand.

Here's a quick update on the vandas.
I bought a new vanda !!!
Vasco Janice Allison, came with keiki and 2 flowering spikes!

The V. Tan Hoon Siang is in full bloom now, not a single bud drop.
Flowers are indestructible, despite the daily heavy downpour.

The Ascocenda Yanisa Gold
http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps736f6b5f.jpg

Rhynchodenia Magic Wand, at it last leg of blooming. The small flowers are badly battered by the rain.

Vanda Somsri Gold should be open these couple of days.
http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps885dad3d.jpg

Also added more spanish moss on the roots of all the vandas, hopefully they like it.

Thanks. It's good to have frequent re-blooming vandas. I do have some that don't like to bloom for very very very long time. I think they will have to make way soon.

sthh 08-27-2014 09:51 PM

And the Vanda Somsri Gold

Rhynchodenia Magic Wand,
Don't know how they manage to survive all the thunderstorm, which was pelting away at the flower buds, but they did and they bloomed.

Vanda Somsri Gold
Transplanted this in a slightly different location, and it is flowering again.
