I can honestly say that Chocolate Drop is one of my top picks for a favorite...I love anything that has a bit of Chocolate Drop in it! I was thrilled to have acquired this plant a few months ago and it has finally bloomed!

This is one of those that was very difficult to get a good photo of...these are two out of the dozens that I attempted!

Very nice, Susanne. I love Chocolate Drop too, but I've never had any luck with one. Oh well.

I can see why its a favourite! Beautiful - such a deep rich colour! I love it too. :)

I was SOOOO glad to see your post. I was once told that "Chocolate Drop is a terrible parent"! Like you, I really go for crosses with Chocolate Drop as one of the parents. I think my favorites among its progeny are BLC Cherry Suisse (I think I have 3 or 4 different varieties of it) and SLC Elegant Oak. Chocolate Drop always adds it's good substance and color saturation. Or, maybe it's just that I'm a sucker for anything red!

Unreal texture Susan!

Hi Susanne, as its name suggests, it's so pretty that I would eat it
Beautiful colour!

Thanks everybody :)

Here's an update :photo: as all three buds are in bloom. There's a second spike which also had the three buds but two of those blasted :scratchhead: That's okay...I'll take one more ;)

Very nice Susanne, your last post really captures the gloss and color of this plant.

Well I am sure to be the minority, but have never been really excited about C. Chocolate Drop.......until I spied the cultivar 'NOK' in our November silent auction. The colors are wonderful!

Mine sported 14 flowers on 2 stems, not a great spectacle for a plant with 28 pseudobulbs, but it is very overgrown and needs dividing and repotting.

Unfortunately I did not get pics before the flowers faded.

I like their waxy flowers.
Chocolate Drop.....seems tasty :)

:) When somebody asks what my favorite 'chid is, it's almost impossible to come up with an answer BUT...Chocolate Drop is always among the top three! There is just "something" about the color and texture of this 'chid that makes me

I got this one from Byrd's Orchids in Lakeland, FL about 6 months ago. I had the pleasure of looking through their personal greenhouse where they had the most beautiful Chocolate Drop in bloom, spotted it as soon as the door opened! I asked Bill if he had any others and he said he didn't...so I told him I'd be happy to take that one ;)
He told me to enjoy looking around and about 10 minutes later, he came up with one for me! Great chids, great people...Bill and Wanda Byrd are always a pleasure to deal with

Susie Q, you know I can't resist!!!!! The flowers are beautiful but where's the pool???????

Angurek 03-26-2010 08:21 AM

"Raspberry Jam" would be a more appropriate name for this one IMO, given the texture and color of the blooms. Something about these blooms makes them look edible.

It's a beautiful, colorful little thing. I love it. :)
