Have you EVER seen orchid list like this???
:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:
Ok, so recently I did join FB orchid group, orchid growers in my old country, Czech Republic and Slovakia. When I grew up in Czech, and even worked in the large nursery with greenhouses, the only available orchids were usual Phalaenopsis, Cymbidiums, Oncidiums, some Phrags and Phags. That was pretty much IT, no special orchids, no minis, just nothing. I knew lot of people in old country loves orchids, but I am just beyond shock from what has changed in the past cca 15 years. I had so much fun talking to all the new orchid friends, and share. By browsing many for me new website in there, I am actually in disbelieve what selection and "cheap" pricing they do have available, I thought that the USA is kind of BIG in orchid hobby and availability here is better than elsewhere, especially in tiny country counting some 10mil people. Now, the main point, one of my new orchid friends, that is growing ONLY as a hobby for 7 years, shared her orchid list with me, and with her permission I just had to post it here. I have never seen anything like this. Once more she is orchid grower only for 7 years, she has regular day job, and she has garden and greenhouse! She has over 700 ORCHIDS!!! This is so so so awesome, my country got to the orchid hobby in big way! So, here I do share her orchid list:-)))))) Acacallis cyanea Acineta beyrodtana Aerangis punctata Aerangis articulata Aerangis citrata Aerangis ellisii Aerangis kirkii Aerangis mystacidii Aerangis rhodosticta Aerangis somalensis Aerangis stylosa Aerangis verdickii Aerides krabiense Anacheilium sceptrum Angraecum calceolus Angraecum leonis Angraecum sesquipedle Barbosella cogniauxeana Bifrenaria harrisoniae Bifrenaria wittigii Bollea ecuadorana Bollea violacea Brassavola cucullata Brassavola flageralis x Cattleya Bactia Brassavola lineata Brassavola nodosa Brassavola perrinii x Cattleya mossiae Brassia Ibrido Brassia jipijapensis Brassidium Shooting Star ´Black Gold´ Broughtonia domingensis Bulbophyllum Elizabeth Ann ´Bucklebery´ Bubophyllum frostii Bulbophyllum claptonense x Bulb sumetranum Bulbophyllum lasiochilum Bulbophyllum leopardinum Bulbophyllum lobbii Bulbophyllum Louis Sanders Bulbophyllum macranthum Bulbophyllum ornatissimum x Bulb. Amazing! I envy her. My 50 plants are a lot of work on window sills but if I could have a system like hers I would probably end up with 600.
|
Good heavens! It might have been easier to list what she doesn't have! LOL! Amazing!!!

iscription asked :)

WOW... that's some list. Sounds like she enjoys her hobby
|
Wow!

Tommy that's work, but I love it!

---------- Post added at 11:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:33 PM ---------- She is really really great, she is so into the orchids, she orders books, reads, studies, and her chids are truly doing great! Now she showed me these 2 new books about miniatures I must have, God, I need to rob the bank, they are so expensive but they are about minis, I must get them:-))) A Compendium of Miniature Orchid Species, Volume 1 and 2 |
To be able to take care of so many orchids and still enjoy them is wonderful. I don't know if I could handle that many orchids.

Oh bloody bloody hell, the Coelogynes! You're lucky you didn't post any personal information, I'd be standing at her doorstep right now if you had! That is a very very nice list in general, but where did she find all those Coelogynes?!
Big big congratulations to her, that is one dedicated orchid grower! Oh and the Compendium on Miniature Orchids Vol. 1&2 should arrive in my mailbox today or tomorrow, just to make you jealous :) The books are really really worth is to be honest, I don't think there's any other book as exhaustive on miniature orchids! And the pictures are just gorgeous! So go and get yourself bankrupt! |
I bet she has her husband working for her plants. lol

Oh, my, then that sounds like a lot of work for someone with a regular job.
|
Thanks for posting the list. I can just dream. I'm getting faster at taking care of the 60 I have, but can't imagine taking care of that many.
The writer and photographer of the Miniature Orchid Compendium are members of my local orchid society. They're really nice and knowledgeable folks who take the time to answer my beginner questions. The books are gorgeous. |

Since I was not getting any shipping confirmation, I did contact them, with email, did not work, than through the message on their website. Stewart answered few days later that they actually sold out on books and they are waiting for more prints from Asia, should have them in February and will ship. It is the end of February, no books, and I did sent probably some 20 emails in last 2 weeks, messages through the page, and even tried to call their number on website multiple times, absolutely no luck, no answer, no reply. I am very worried, and will probably have to claim my money via PayPal. Another member of our Florida orchid group just ordered 12 of these sets for him and other members, and he is in panic mode, because he is in the same situation - no books, and no communication what so ever. Sad, that such an amazing looking book is so hard to get, and it won't probably even happen. I did order from Britain because at that time both US sellers were actually sold out:-( |
TommyMiami, So sorry to hear that. Hope publisher air freights before February is over. I haven't ordered them, but am tempted. I have their masdevalia book.
|
That sucks TommyMiami! I've been in contact with Stewart (that's where I ordered both books) and he has been nothing but superfriendly, great communication and appreciated the feedback I gave him on the books.
Maybe, just maybe (because that was the case for me) he is on business travel to Asia or the US and has thus limited access to his e-mails. I was about to cancel my order as well when he came back to me with sincere apologies! I would give him some more time (even though it's been a while for you), I don't think you should be worried about your money. Good luck! I've had the books for a couple of months now and wow, just wow! This is going to be my miniature bible! |
Many thanks, well, he did answer my first email at the beginning of February, but since then nothing, and their phone number is not working also, it is kinda weird, and I would expect better customer service, I know others waiting as well and having the same issue, I am not sure if this website is one man show, and he is the one doing everything maybe? I am still waiting but I can not wait for another 2 months though:-(

That is a well balanced set of mostly high light orchids that are low maintenance...that is how she does it. :)

That’s an impressive list — man a number of them would love to find a home at my house and I have only gotten through a small number of them. WOW!
I too wondered even with automated watering and fertilization there is still a lot that has to be done to keep plants healthy and growing well. It’s so nice she has flowers blooming all year. And she gathered all these in what 4 years — just tremendous. Me too, I quickly went from 4 to 72. 700 is 🤪 unimaginable. I grow on porch and deck with shade cloth. They still need fungicide spraying or at least a protectant like Physan 20 every 2 weeks, maybe that can go through the irrigation system too. I love that stuff for helping keep mine in line and clean. But you know how they seem to get various sun burns as the angle of the sun changes and if you don’t catch it can lead to bacterial infection on top of the fungal or after a sunburn, or you have leads growing in the wrong place, or flowers/stems need to be clipped, a lead or leaf gets injured, and then there is repotting and division. Even with mine that always gets overlooked,mI don’t know annyone who lkkk and then it’s hard to get the darn things browning level. They just seem to need constant care. This year several bad storms where the wind as just thrown 20-25 right off the shelf and they were rolling around on the floor — broke large leads with full sheathes, roots, and on some multiple leaves on some large bifoliates. It was 26 to tend to. I mean they were in heavy clay pots and they went sailing. So that mean replacing bark, and both times had just that morning watered so they had some weight but had to do repotting several, had to go find new clay pots so the baskets and pots inside were back where they belonged. And then there is the cleaning of the greenhouse itself, the floor, etc. not to mention the equipment. Oh my gosh, I have made myself worn out just thinking of her 700 plants and all that to do. They just require attention — my little 72 plants can keep me busy several days a week and for several hours each. And I’m sheepish to say, I can end up spending several hours each day just piddling and looking and figuring out when to start looking for their sheaths, and then the buds to come out and eventually open. I have about 8 now with sheaths full and several have large sheaths on multiple leads and I get as excited as I did when I was saw my first orchid in Florida all those years ago. And certainly when my own first got old enough to bloom. I had to step away from then for many years but came back about 7 years ago and sorely missed them. I hope I can keep from getting too many — but I’m ashamed to say I don’t think my self control on orchids is very good. 🫣😳 I do see folks who just hang them up, put them on the bench and that’s it. I envy them, I’m a bit obsessive compulsive because I like them to look show ready even though I don’t show. I like my bulbs to all be plump and the leaves shiny, no bugs, spots, etc. I don’t like dead leaves, or plant parts growing wonky, etc. I have to get out there and stake them, replace any lost bark, make sure roots are going strong and if not figure why not. It’s a lot. I do envy her list though, I would be like a kid in a candy shop. And this winter for the first time, trying a grow tent (Gorilla) with LED light (750 KIND) and their ventilation which changes the air in the tent multiple times a day plus a couple circulation fans. No heat due to being in the far end of my kitchen. I’m hoping being down on the north end and next to the sliding door, temp will drop down far enough to give a decent day to night temp change. They say the temp inside is about 10 degrees higher than room air. They said can bring it down with a small greenhouse cooler. Shouldn’t need humidifier but can use one on a timer or controller that runs everything but not springing for that until I decide if I need. It will be sitting on tile over concrete. No real way to get fresh air in the temp except the house air. Just need to open the doors two or three times a day to change it out. They say I can put another inline carbon filer fan outside the tent but I don’t understand what that will do that the one inside isn’t doing as it pulls all the air in the tent through the carbon filter and dispenses it inside the house. That is the only thing that concerns me with a lot humidity. I mean some would be welcome with my terribly dry hvac air all winter but not above 50%. They say I can exhaust it with corrugated tubing to the outside via a window (have to really insulate around it so I’m not letting all my household heat outside). Supposedly the screened vents low in the tent will draw fresh room air in to the tent as the carbon filter fan draws it out. These tents are often used for growing cannabis so they want the tent air coming out into the room or outside the house to be quite odor free especially for where it’s not legal to grow cannabis or where they don’t want the odor in their house. I know I hate the smell of weed just growing in a greenhouse but then I don’t like tobacco smell either — just in hand or the smoke which are quite different at least to me. But since I’m doing orchids no worry there but it’s nice to have any fungal spores etc captured in the filter and not ending up in the house. Sure hope I don’t end up killing my collection. But my house humidity at 20-30% and just a 4 hours of light isn’t working either.Been boarding them but tired of what they do to healthy plants — I sent nice plump bulbs with root tip and growth and they come back out of a greenhouse for months and they are flat as pancakes, no root tips, no new root growth and no growth on the Vandas. Lose 1-2 plants every year that only one has been replaced and it wasn’t replaced as such just another same type. So this year I’m hoping this will work and next year a greenhouse will finally get built and maybe this tent will be for winter tomatoes and lettuces. Etc.in the utility room. Well I wish her the best with that lovely list of plants — once again it’s impressive. |
